C&O 4-8-4 #603 - Chesapeake & Ohio RR
Title:  C&O 4-8-4 #603 - Chesapeake & Ohio RR
Description:  Nice photo of the 1935 Lima built Northern-type locomotive that the C&O called "Greenbriers", their J-3 class. The first 5 were given names - this one being labeled "Edmund Randolf" after the distinguished statesman. According to www.Steamlocomotives.com " Known as Greenbriers on the C&O, these were among the largest 4-8-4s built. According to Drury (1993), the design was based on the earlier 2-10-4. All of the engines had the same power dimensions (cylinder volume, boiler pressure setting, and driver diameter) and 14" (356 mm) piston valves. All twelve had trailing-truck boosters to raise starting tractive effort. The first two orders used Worthington Type 5-S feed water heaters." Specifics - 74" drivers, impressive 255 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 477,000 lb, tractive effort of 66,453 lb. No exact date was given for this photo so an arbitrary one was used. An unknown photographer captured this moment.
