KCS GP40 794 |
Description: |
Here is an 800-gallon auxiliary fuel tank on Kansas City Southern GP40 794, previously Illinois Central Gulf 3058. It was located between the front truck and the 2600-gallon factory-installed fuel tank. The "60-17" stencil on the truck would indicate that the locomotive was still fitted with 76 MPH gearing, and not the usual 62-15 65 MPH gear ratio. The KCS installed these tanks on at least seven of the 19 ex-ICG GP40's it purchased in 1981. |

KCS 4061 |
Description: |
KCS F9Am's 4061 and 4053 sit outs the west side of the West Yard diesel shop, along with SW7 4302. The two F-units were rebuilt by EMD in March 1956 after a head-on collision at Sulphur Springs, Texas; which certainly contributed to their longevity. In late 1982 and early 1983 the KCS kept a pair of F-units at New Orleans as emergency power. |

KCS 4076 |
Description: |
An uncommon view of a KCS F7B slug at West Yard, just outside of New Orleans, with nothing coupled to one end. The railroad had three B-unit slugs, and during this time they almost always showed up in New Orleans between a pair of geeps. The 4076 was coupled to GP40-2 797. |

KCS GP30 4103 |
Description: |
With one exception, all of the Kansas City Southern's 20 GP30's were repainted from their original red color into the white scheme when they reached their 15th birthdays in 1977-78 and their trusts were paid off. Here is recently-repainted 4103 in the joint KCS-SLSF yard in Hope, Arkansas, just south of the crossing with the Missouri Pacific's main line between Little Rock and Texarkana. This GP30-F7B-GP30 set of power had arrived from Shreveport on train No. 24, and would return south on No. 23. The 4103 was retired in 1990 and sold to the Southeast Kansas Railroad two years later. Today the KCS no longer serves Hope, and this yard belongs to the Kiamichi Railroad |
