Off in a backwater
Title:  Off in a backwater
Description:  As the 1970s wore on, the Bay Ridge Branch, once a busy freight corridor with several trains a day coming off the New Haven to the car floats, became a backwater of the PC system. It would remain so under Conrail, who finally sold it to the LIRR. I often wondered why the daily CR train that came down to Fresh Pond from the Bronx lingered so long there. Surely it couldnt take that many hours to conduct the interchange. A trip to Bay Ridge explained why. I was there for non rail reasons when I caught the local train that handled whatever traffic there was on the Bay Ridge Branch. As you can see, there isnt much. The train is near 8th Av and 65th St in Bay Ridge-thats the N-Sea Beach 8th Av station beyond the train-with an SW 1500 still in PC paint, a caboose and two cars. The line is 10 MPH all the way to Fresh Pond, so it will be a long trip back. Once at Fresh Pond, they have to put the cars in their train for Oak Point, get the power back together, and go back to the Bronx. It makes for a long day. Now I know why those trains sit all day.

Not much difference
Title:  Not much difference
Description:  At this point in Conrails history, there was still a lot of equipment in predecessor paint schemes, and it was not uncommon to see solid sets of un repainted power, though most non PC units had at least been renumbered if not patch painted. Since the PC people largely ran the show, their numbering plan held sway. As such, most PC power did not need to be renumbered, so you were more likely to see untouched PC power than anything else. An example is here at Poughkeepsie, where we have not only this U25B, but a transfer caboose still in PC garb. There's also something in NYC lettering in the yard, though I can't see enough of it to identify. All this is in the shadow of the former New Haven Poughkeepsie Bridge, out of service since a fire in May 1974, and now a pedestrian walkway over the river.

Put power
Title:  Put power
Description:  The Putnam Division was still a going concern in the late 70s, though its days were numbered. Service at the time went as far as an A&P warehouse in, I think, Tuckahoe. The power requirements were not extensive, and this GP 7 was more than up to the task. Seen at the Putnam Division yard in the Bronx, where the Hudson Line follows the Harlem River, and the Put goes north. Note the small Conrail lettering and can opener on the long hood. And how about those PC trailers at left!!

Lots of these
Title:  Lots of these
Description:  A model CR had a lot of at start up was the U30B, almost 60 of them. They were common on the trains to Long Island, which ran out of Selkirk. That yard had most of the GEs assigned to it for maintenance, so they were daily visitors at Fresh Pond, which is where we see this one. It and the other road power are waiting for the crew to come back from Bay Ridge with their SW 1500 and whatever cars they might have.

Getting a trim
Title:  Getting a trim
Description:  The yard engines in the various hump yard on the Conrail system were medium horsepower six axle units, either U23Cs or SD 38s, which had good adhesion, but didnt need a lot of raw power. At Selkirk, where most of the GE power was assigned(Selkirk was known as the GE captial of the world for a time) this meant U23Cs. We see one working as trim unit in the eastbound bowl.

Yard power, and a rare road unit
Title:  Yard power, and a rare road unit
Description:  Conrail used many of the ex PC SW1500s for local and yard jobs in the New York area. We see one here at Oak Point in company of a much more unusual unit, though a regular visitor to the city. Selkirk was home base to much of CRs GE fleet including the four U36Bs. They were a common sight on SELI/LISE and its occasional modification, SEOP/OPSE, the connection to the Long Island at Fresh Pond. U36B 2974 is on hand today, and will return to Selkirk later in the evening.

U 25B's and a U 33B
Title:  U 25B's and a U 33B
Description:  In May of 1983, Tri State Chapter NRHS ran a trip on the West Shore to Selkirk. On arrival at Selkirk, we passed the dead line, which had a lot of interesting items. These were all taken from the train through those wonderful Lexan windows, so the quality may not be so hot, but the subjects are worth a little grubbiness.

LISE
Title:  LISE
Description:  One of the more obscure operations on the Conrail system was SELI/LISE, which also ran under several other symbols over the years. It connected Conrail with the Bronx and the Long Island RR, which had a minimal freight operation compared to its commuter trains. Catching it was not difficult if you knew when the trains ran, though my issue was usually more a case of having the free time to do it. I got lucky one day in November 1983, catching it as it was going over the Hell Gate bridge.

LISE at Queens Blvd
Title:  LISE at Queens Blvd
Description:  LISE came up the NY Connecting RR from Fresh Pond, where it interchanged with the LIRR. Power was typically a set of GE's, several hundred of which were based at Selkirk, including on occasion one of more of the U36B's that were built for Auto Train. Don't think I ever saw an EMD road unit. The SW1500 was to run local cars on the Bay Ridge Branch beyond Fresh Pond, which CR owned at the time. The departure back to the Bronx depended on how long it toook to service the branch, but it was typically several hours. Here it crosses over Queens Blvd on a series of concrete arches.

Tarrytown local
Title:  Tarrytown local
Description:  Conrail still had some freight business on the Hudson Division in the early 80s, enough to support a road train, SETT, from Selkirk to Tarrytown, and a couple of locals. Heres the first of two I saw that day passing south of Croton Harmon station. SW1500's were the typical power on most of the local trains in the area, and could be found all the way down into the Bronx and Queens. Note the dwarf signals.

Racks from Doremus
Title:  Racks from Doremus
Description:  Conrail had a large auto unloading facility at Doremus Av in Newark, and would dispatch trains out of there with both loads and empties. Heres one crossing the bridge at Iona Island headed up the West Shore. Note the open top racks. Don't see those anymore.
