One that got away Part 1
Title:  One that got away Part 1
Description:  Story here is #33 was the last full Baldwin at the Geneva Works. Here she sits on the interchange track to a scrapyard in Ogden. Literally in sight of this is the Utah Railway Museum at Ogden Union Station. I called them, and to say they were disinterested would be an understatement. So, poor 33 was cut up a couple of weeks later. If I'd just had some money (I was right out of college and really broke)........

Description:  At the point I shot this, 52 was owned by SMS Rail Services, and was stored literally in the 'back 40' of the Muskogee port. Half repainted into Johnson Terminal paint.

NDC 51
Title:  NDC 51
Description:  Weird one here-51 is a VO660 re-engined with an Alco 251 into a virtual model S6 switcher. You can still see the Baldwin cast frame and cab. Unique engine, scrapped sometime after I shot this.

WVRR 99
Title:  WVRR 99
Description:  Only shot I managed of 99, thanks to the shutter spring on my ancient Nikon crapping out. 99 had just arrived on the Whitewater Valley, and is still sporting roller bearing dummy trucks and IBCX reporting marks, used for transit. Shot during switch moves with Lima 25 providing power, right at dusk.

EFCX 606 with a month to live
Title:  EFCX 606 with a month to live
Description:  This one really disgusts me. After years of switching the elevator, 606 suffered a piston failure. Repairable, but probably beyond the mechanical talents of the elevator. So, to their credit, they donated 606 to the Siouxland Historical RR Society in Sioux City, with the clause that it had to be moved in X amount of time (they were moving it every time they had to bring in fertilizer). And, shockers, Siouxland did....nothing. So, the Nebraska Rwy Museum in Fremont was contacted, and they turned it down (VP there said he wouldn't take anything that wasn't a late-model EMD, so much for the museum part of their name). By this time, the 606 saga had drug on for a couple of years. I actually contacted museums in Florida (this was a SCL unit originally), and MOT in St Louis, and all said no way. So, a month after I shot this, 606 was sold to a local who cut it up for scrap.

ELS 101
Title:  ELS 101
Description:  In the storage line at Wells and buried behind flats was 101, a super rare DS44-660 and original E&LS engine. This unit used to be a regular runner on ELS, and I wonder if it could run again....Coupled at the nose is RS12 #207, which ran on the Nicolet Badger Northern, a shortline over in Wisconsin.

ELS 210
Title:  ELS 210
Description:  Good news at Wells was the boat ramp parking lot, coupled with a rental car that I didn't care about, provided a ready platform to shoot many Baldwins over the fence.

ELS 212
Title:  ELS 212
Description:  The story behind 212, as I hear it, was it was halfway thru a full overhaul that never got finished. When ELS expanded in the 1980s thru purchase of Milwaukee Road trackage north of Green Bay, they reportedly intended on running mostly Baldwins. The reason was simple-Baldwins require much lower fuel consumption per horsepower than EMDs. To this end, they overhauled RS12 #300 and started 212. Alas, the rigors of keeping a couple hundred miles of trackage and multiple daily trains going took over priorities.

SLRS 301
Title:  SLRS 301
Description:  Engine for the day's train. Of course, I missed her working because I was, well, at work myself. Interestingly (to a gearhead like me, at least), 301 had her prime mover freeze up years ago when still at the mine. The block actually has waves in it from ice formation. Yet, all the cylinders still align with the crank, there were not block cracks, and she still runs great. Baldwins are tough. If this had happened to an EMD, all new block would have been required..

The 606
Title:  The 606
Description:  I know most fans won't care about this shot, but I'm a gearhead, so it goes in. These are 6-banger 606 engines that SMS got from a stationary generator site. They are practically new from an hours of service perspective. Arrangement and baseplate are different than the 606 in a locomotive, but they can use the entire top by remounting to a locomotive baseplate, then swapping the manifold positions. SMS has the shop to do this, no problem.
