Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin (and a handful in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) in the fall of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Repaired Grade Crossing, S. Linwood Ave., Appleton, WI
Title:  Repaired Grade Crossing, S. Linwood Ave., Appleton, WI
Description:  Looking east at the recently (surprisingly) repaired CN, former SOO, grade crossing for R. Sabee Co. spur on S. Linwood Ave. at Appleton, WI on 5 Nov. '18. Several days earlier, I noticed the grade crossing was closed and some work was being done on it. I was certain that they were going to remove the rails, because the facility has not received rail service for a long time. While this repair does not guarantee that renewed rail service is imminent, it does indicate that renewed rail service is possible.

IC 9565 and IC 3138
Title:  IC 9565 and IC 3138
Description:  A CN local approaches Hwy. M as it heads northwest with 44 cars via former SOO rails at Medina Station, Town of Dale, Outagamie Co., WI on 6 Nov. '18. Train was headed for Waupaca and had two locomotives, IC 9565 and IC 3138. The WC built a depot here (on the opposite side of Hwy. M) somewhere between 1871, when the line was laid, and 1889, when I found it depicted on a map in Plat Book of Outagamie County…, 1889. The site was labeled as Medina Station on maps until at least 1915.

Description:  A boatload of 3-bay covered hoppers recently appeared at the CN, former SOO, yard at the intersection of N. Linwood Ave. at W. College Ave. at Appleton, WI on 7 Nov. '18. It's rare to see this many cars in this yard (these days it's pretty rare to see any). Some of these cars were destined for Center Valley, some may have been destined for Shawano as well. There is an interchange track connecting this yard to the nearby former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction. Centerbeam flatcars are spotted on the team track here periodically. Konz Wood Products is one customer that receives lumber here.

CN 2569 and BNSF 4403
Title:  CN 2569 and BNSF 4403
Description:  A CN ballast train (Herzog ballast cars) approaches S. Mason St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 7 Nov. '18. The old, seemingly idle, industrial facility partially visible at left used to receive rail service, many years ago. The facility at 1215-1225 W. Spencer St., Appleton, WI, dates to at least the ‘50s. It was home to the John Krogh Supply Co. (a.k.a. John Krogh Wholesale Co.). They went out of business in early ‘67 and the Arrow Moving & Storage Co. moved into the facility. Signs indicate that Miller Electric and Earthkote International, Inc., where more recent occupants.

CN 9455
Title:  CN 9455
Description:  A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. while setting out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 8 Nov. '18. Train will soon continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands at right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett).

IC 9565 and IC 3138
Title:  IC 9565 and IC 3138
Description:  A CN local crosses S. Mason St. while headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 9 Nov. '18. Train has just set out a string of cars at the yard at Appleton Junction and is now bound for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I recently discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously.

Title:  IC 3129
Description:  A CN local crosses Center Valley Rd. as it pulls 20 cars northwest via former SOO rails at Center Valley, WI on 10 Nov. '18. It did not look like the train was slowing down to service the CHS Larsen Cooperative-Center Valley facility (out-of-frame to the right), but they did stop to set out 18 3-bay covered hoppers. Larsen Cooperative merged with CHS, Inc. on 1 Sep. '12.

IC 3129
Title:  IC 3129
Description:  A CN local approaches W. Forest St. as it pulls 2 cars north via former SOO rails at Black Creek, WI (originally Middleburg, WI) on 10 Nov. '18. Train departed Appleton, WI with 20 cars, but dropped off 18 covered hoppers at Center Valley, WI. The building partially visible at right is the historic Frank Pure Food Co. sauerkraut factory, 304 W. Forest St. It was built by C. C. Lang & Son (a.k.a. C. C. Lang & Co.) in 1946 and purchased by Frank’s in ‘56. It was purchased by the Fremont Co. between ‘82 and ‘85. Sauerkraut production ceased ca. ‘93, when they closed the facility. It received rail service for much, if not all, of its use as canning plant for those 47 years. It was most recently occupied by Black Creek Auto Parts, LLC. That auto parts and recycling business failed after several years and the owners abandoned the site in 2011. Several references suggest that they still, somehow, retain ownership, even though the delinquent, irresponsible failures owe over $70,000 in back taxes (at least as of 2014).

Title:  IC 3129
Description:  A CN local crosses Peach Rd. as it transitions from the former SOO rails to a section of track which connects to a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI on 10 Nov. '18. Peach Rd. is now the northern terminus of the former SOO (originally W&N) main line that once ran from Neenah to Argonne (the small stack of ties rests upon the right-of-way which continued northward). This connector track was installed around the time that the C&NW main line was abandoned, to facilitate continued rail service for the nearby Shawano Paper Mill. There is a fair amount of flange squealing as the train traverses this nearly 180 degree arc with an approximately 700 ft. radius.

IC 3129
Title:  IC 3129
Description:  A CN local crosses Hwy. MM as it prepares to switch the Shawano Paper Mill (div. of Little Rapids Corp.) via former C&NW rails at West Shawano, Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI on 10 Nov. '18. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. on 7 Feb. 1894, the name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it is still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. That name still appears on some property records. The train is running on an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it. The fence at right surrounds the paper mill's water treatment facility, which was built upon the former site of the Shawano Brick Yard (a.k.a. Larson Brick Yard). The brick yard, which had its own narrow gauge railway, produced fine white or cream colored brick from 1891 until 1946. The paper mill purchased the property at some point after the brick yard closed and eventually demolished the entire facility. The paper mill's historic office building was constructed in 1901 of brick from that yard.

Description:  A CN local parallels 4th St. and approaches Racine St. while it works in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 16 Nov. '18. A couple of blocks away, a train returning from Hilbert waits to pass through on its way back to Neenah. The facility in the background is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

IC 3138
Title:  IC 3138
Description:  An interesting, and unusual, CN local (returning from Waupaca) slows to halt short of N. Lake St. while headed southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 16 Nov. '18. I have a strong interest in railroad operations, but I am, admittedly, not well-versed in the specifics of their methods. This is one of those incidents which I find interesting, but it leaves me scratching my head. A crewmember, holding a fusee, is preparing to dismount to flag the crossing, even though the signals, bell, and gates were functioning.

I have a strong interest in railroad operations, but I am, admittedly, not well-versed in the specifics of their methods. This is one of those incidents which I find interesting, but it leaves me scratching my head. The local paused short of N. Lake St., a crewmember with a fusee dismounted and flagged the crossing, even though the signals, bell, and gates were functioning. The crewmember snubbed out the fusee on the pavement and is preparing to remount. Train was returning from Waupaca with over a dozen cars. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at right. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. on 20 Apr. ’22. Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

Title:  CN 2609 and CEFX 6007 (ex-SOO 6007)
Description:  I wasn't the only train nut who did a double take when this former SOO locomotive passed the W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) as it extracted a string of cars from the former SOO, now CN, yard along Harrison St. at Neenah, WI on 20 Nov. '18. The hardworking volunteers operating the Boys' & Girls' Brigade’s annual wreath sale weren’t sure what to think about the foamers trying to shoot this interesting locomotive.

Description:  An interesting pair of foreigners lead a through freight setting out and picking up cars at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 23 Nov. '18. Train had two locomotives, CSX 16 and CSX 267. I didn’t realize that the grade along Union St. was this significant (either that or maybe I had the camera canted a little more than I thought).

Description:  A through freight with a large, interesting selection of motive power rests on CN, former C&NW, rails at W. Bell St. at Neenah, WI on 24 Nov. '18. Train had five locomotives, UP 4596, UP 8501, UP 4693, CEFX 6007 (former SOO 6007), GECX 2036. I don’t encounter former SOO equipment this close to former SOO rails often enough. Neenah's Southpark Industrial Center (industrial park is too plebeian for oft ostentatious Neenah) is visible in the background, including Faith Technologies, Inc., 585 Enterprise Dr., (a former Plexus Corp. facility).

IC 3138 and EJE 703
Title:  IC 3138 and EJE 703
Description:  A CN local momentarily fouls W. 2nd St. while setting out cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 29 Nov. '18. After finishing up here, the local will continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. A few blocks away, another local waits to enter the yard after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. Silly me, I thought that current law prohibits any of us from attempting to “drive any vehicle through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier at a railroad crossing while such gate or barrier is closed or is being opened or closed.” Evidently, this truck driver feels that the law does not apply to him. The near side gate is just out-of-frame to the right; you need to zoom in to see the far side gate partially visible between the locomotive and the truck.
