Album Info:A lot of intermodal freight has gone to containers. International freight has been shipped in them since the 1960's, and there has been a growing trend over the last 30 years toward them in domestic freight as well. JB Hunt got into them early-I pulled a lot of them as a driver there in the 90's, and they already had a fleet of 15,000 in 1995 when I started there. They now have something like 75,000. Others have joined that club as well, and seeing Swift, Schneider, C R England, Fed Ex, etc, containers are common. I have made an effort to get photos, which are here. Modelers, feel free to use these in your modeling efforts.

Former NYSW car
Title:  Former NYSW car
Description:  As explained elsewhere in this album, NYSW had a fleet of Gunderson cars they acquired when the first Sea Land trains started up in the mid 80s. After CP took over the D&H, and NYSW was no longer the designated operator, CSX, who had funded the lease, took the cars back. A good number of them are still in service, such as this one on NS in Mabelvale GA.

Original Sea Land
Title:  Original Sea Land
Description:  Back when stack trains were a big new thing, and Walter Rich had done an end run around Conrail with his Jersey-Binghamton haulage rights, he landed a contract to carry Sea Land boxes in a land bridge arrangement with BN, Chessie, and the D&H. It was a greater distance and took longer than APLs route via UP, CNW and Conrail, but somehow, they won the business, partly because Chessie had an interest in Sea Land. As a result, NYSW acquired a fleet of Gunderson stack cars, one of which we see here with a Maersk box in the lower position, headed north on the CSX Lineville Sub.

Schneider man, Schneider man, does whatever a Schneider can...
Title:  Schneider man, Schneider man, does whatever a Schneider can...
Description:  Schneider National Carriers was an early adopter of intermodal, along with JB Hunt, putting sizeable volumes of TOFC on the rails by the mid 90s. I can recall going to the Santa Fe at Willow Springs and KC to find that we had our own section, and the other dedicated lot was Schneiders. Where JB got into containers early-they already had around 15000 by the time I started driving there in 1995-Schneider was a little slower to get into that form, though once they realized the cost advantage of double stacking, they were in. We see one of their newer boxes on a northbound CSX train on the Lineville Sub. What I don't understand is why it's on the top, and not the JB box!!

Not many of these
Title:  Not many of these
Description:  JB Hunt has a vast container fleet. When I started there in 1995, there were approximately 10,000 53 foot boxes, and maybe 7000 48 footers, split between about 3000 Thermacubes(700000 series) and plate side(600000 series). By 2003, the 48s were gone, and the 53 foot fleet was expanding rapidly. A newer development was these 53 foot reefers, which came on around 2011. There are only several hundred of these, so catching one is a real find. This one is southbound on CSX.
