Slight problem.
Title:  Slight problem.
Description:  Look at the trucks on this auto rack, and the lean of the cars ahead of it. The pushers pushed, the road power didnt pull. The result was several of these racks almost taking a dive. Probably some discounts at a few New England dealerships next month.

Conrail Quality

Description:  Conrail Quality was a marketing slogan that was generously applied to all new power starting around 1991, but which also made its way to other equipment as well, such as this auto rack seen in DABU at Waverly NY.

These things were a big deal
Title:  These things were a big deal
Description:  At the time, the big new thing in automobile transport was the Auto Max, an articulated car that reduced tare weight and increased payload. This westbound CSX train had a good sized block of them, including this set with Arkansas-Oklahoma reporting marks.

Everyone is in on it
Title:  Everyone is in on it
Description:  This car has reporting marks for the Crab Orchard & Egyptian, a southern Illinois short line, seen on QNLKC at Noel Mo. It reminds me of the days when short lines with only a few miles of track had huge fleets of per diem cars, back in the 1970s. There was also an AOK car on this train, seen elsewhere on this page.

Autos everywhere
Title:  Autos everywhere
Description:  This KCS auto rack was in a westbound train on NS near Cleveland. It represents international operations of the KCS system, with both KCS and KCSM markings on the rack. Its important to note in this age of controversy over tariffs, that autos have moved duty free in North America since 1965, which has been a benefit to everyone involved in the industry. The KCS rack number is 18067

The little guys, too
Title:  The little guys, too
Description:  Though now owned by conglomerate Genesee & Wyoming, its hard not to think of P&W as a small line, which it was. They did think big, though, which helped them progress through the years. Whod have thought a short line would have auto racks?? Here you go.

Title:  Mexican car
Description:  This car was eastbound on NS. The growing number of Mexican racks shows how continental the auto makers have become.

Home road horse
Title:  Home road horse
Description:  A thoroughbred herald auto rack at Bremen on NS. This looks a lot nicer than the old herald. Racks and the flatcars they sit on are not always owned by the same organization, and such is the case here. The flat is part of the TTX fleet, while NS owns the rack, its number is NS 28139

Another oldie
Title:  Another oldie
Description:  Hard to believe its almost 20 years since Conrail vanished from the scene as a trunk route. Fortunately, there are still some cars rolling around that have not been repainted, such as this one rolling east on NS.

Gone to extremes
Title:  Gone to extremes
Description:  A pair of auto racks head north to the Lineville Sub. Interesting juxtaposition: one rack from Canada, the other from Mexico. The rack number on the Ferromex car is FXE 310258.

SP car
Title:  SP car
Description:  One of the good things, from a fan point of view, of there being so much equipment on the Class 1 roads is that takes years to repaint and remark everything. So it is with this SP car with Cotton Belt reporting marks on a northbound at Manchester on CSX.

Still intrigued by these
Title:  Still intrigued by these
Description:  Back in the 70s and early 80s when per diem cars were common, it was not unusual to see car types you would not expect from the likes of roads like Norwood & St Lawrence, or Middletown & New Jersey, who had car fleets disproportionate to the size of the operation. Providence & Worcester falls into that category-what would a short line need with auto racks?? Except that P&W does actually serve a large auto unloading facility in Rhode Island. So now it makes sense. This car is northbound on NS.

Ferromex rack
Title:  Ferromex rack
Description:  There are not a lot of automotive loads on the KCS, but a few do show up. This one was in a Ferromex rack, not surprising given the traffic to and from Mexico the KCS handles.

Anniversary rack
Title:  Anniversary rack
Description:  This 125th anniversary KCS two unit articulated auto rack was southbound on a Q train in the snow. I grew up in NY City in the 60s and 70s, so graffiti on railcars is nothing new to me, its always been part of the passing scene. But its too bad an otherwise good paint scheme is marred by this degree of vandalism.
