Conrail box
Title:  Conrail box
Description:  When I took this in 1978, just two years after Conrail startup, anything painted full CR was still something of a novelty, as there was an awful lot of equipment that was in patch paint. This fully painted CR 60 foot box was on the LIRR RF 7 job rolling on the bypass track to the south of track 8 at Jamaica station, headed for Holban.

Per diem car
Title:  Per diem car
Description:  Because of the per diem rules concerning railroad equipment in force at the time, some short lines had large fleets of cars that were essentially free runners, and didnt come home much, a lot like Railbox, only owned by a particular road. Middletown & New Jersey was one such road. They had a very short main line in Orange County NY, and little on line traffic, but a large group of these box cars, which could be seen everywhere. This one was passing Jamaica station on the LIRR, bound for Holban Yard on RF 7, the west end job that handled traffic from Sunnyside Yard A to various points on the west end of the railroad, working as directed. A bonus is the EL box right behind. Always good to see EL represented!!

Classic, almost 20 years later
Title:  Classic, almost 20 years later
Description:  This car is now on its third owner in its first owners paint scheme. The EL merger was 18 years earlier, in 1960, and Conrail got the car when it took over EL operations two years prior to the photo. The Erie equipment seemed to have a longer life ahead of it than DLW cars, with some Erie boxcars being spotted at the Binghamton Agway into the early 1990s. Dont know how long this one lasted, but it was still hard at work on the D&H in Oneonta this day.

Rare find
Title:  Rare find
Description:  As Conrail started to get a handle on their operatons, some cars quickly became hard to find, especially those from the smaller component roads with smaller fleets. The larger roads-EL, PC, and to an extent, Reading-had fairly modern equipment, many cars built in the 1970s. The LV and CNJ had mostly aging cars, and much smaller fleets. These were rationalized early, and after the first few years, it was a real challenge to find CNJ or LV cars. This LV box was on the D&H, still making a few more pennies for CR before being sent to the bone yard. Note the D&H gon to the left. Those are now a memory as well.

Didnt expect these
Title:  Didnt expect these
Description:  Though I suppose I should have. My friend Dan Heller was helping his brother move to Phoenix in the summer of 1980 when he caught these Apache RR box cars near Holbrook. When I think of Arizona, I usually think of minerals, not manufactured products that roll in box cars. Then I recalled that there was a paper mill on the line. Now it makes sense!!

Auto parts car
Title:  Auto parts car
Description:  Prior to the doublestack era, there were many of these 86 foot auto parts box cars in service in the US. The large size was to maximize the cubic footage. Since many auto parts are light-as a truck driver, I carried many loads of plastic and fiberglass parts where I had a 53 foot trailer full to the doors with less than 10,000 lbs-these cars would cube out before they got anywhere close to weight limits, and they allowed a large quantity of product to be shipped at one time. This SP car was on the Southern Pacific near Phoenix.

Fallen but not gone
Title:  Fallen but not gone
Description:  The merger that created the Illinois Central Gulf was eight years behind, but there was a lot of equipment that had not been repainted. GM&O power ran on the ICG well into the 1980s. This pair of GM&O box cars was eastbound at Bayview, still innocent of any sign of the 1972 merger.

Title:  B&O boxcar
Description:  In the late 70s and early 80s it was still possible to find a lot of older equipment still in service, in historic paint schemes. Here is one such car, a 50 foot B&O double door box on a B&M train leaving White River Jct.

Whose is it??
Title:  Whose is it??
Description:  This boxcar seems to have a case of split personalities, as it is lettered for both CNW and Rock Island. Joint ownership?? Not hardly. This photo was taken Labor Day weekend in 1981; the Rock by then was but a memory. CNW had acquired some of the rolling stock, and changed the reporting marks, but not painted out the Rock markings.

ACL box car
Title:  ACL box car
Description:  One of the thngs I love about railroad yards is that often old equipment goes there not so much to die, but to live on in obscurity. This tends to let some of it last a very long time. This ACL box was at Richmond in May 1985, long after the ACL was a memory.

Title:  Its not just for breakfast
Description:  The Tropicana folks, who make all the orange juice in Bradenton Fla, have a distribution center in Kearny NJ, to which they send trainloads of their product. The cars go north in a dedicated train, but return as they get emptied, often in blocks. Heres a block of returning empties seen from Telegraph Road in Alexandria.

Rare pair
Title:  Rare pair
Description:  A couple of now rare cars were rolling past BD. One is a CNW car with an interesting message-I wonder if it was an ex CGW car perhaps. The D&H box isnt all that interesting, but after CP took over, most D&H rolling stock was gone rather quickly. So its a look at a vanishing part of the northeast rail scene.

Not just diesels
Title:  Not just diesels
Description:  Much was made of the ex LV and Reading power that was conveyed to the D&H at Conrail startup. There was also some freight equipment. Most LV cars were in pretty sad shape, and almost all of them went to CR and were scrapped shortly into the Conrail era. Some Reading cars survived, with some box cars going to the D&H, such as this one on RPPY at BX. The only change to it was the reporting marks, leaving no doubt as t the previous owner. The NW hopper behind is also a classic, with its hamburger herald.
