Album Info:Facilities and right of way of the Erie Lackawanna from all points of the system. Sometimes they're recognizable, sometimes it requires some imagination. Mostly abandoned lines, but there are some things like stations on lines that are active.

High above
Title:  High above
Description:  Im riding on the scoot that protects the Suffern-Port Jervis mid day run, high above the Moodna Creek valley on its namesake viaduct. Down below is the Erie Newburgh Branch right of way, most of the time obscured by trees, but now in winter laid bare. Were looking south toward Washingtonville.

Erie station
Title:  Erie station
Description:  This is the west end of the Erie station at Washingtonville NY as it looked in February 1984. The last train had run here in 1977, though the track would not be lifted til later in 1984.. Note the Erie station sign still in place. The building burned in the mid 1990s.

Looking toward Greycourt
Title:  Looking toward Greycourt
Description:  Theres not much to see looking west, just a wide spot where there may have been a short siding. The station is behind me, were looking toward Greycourt, where the line branched from the Main Line.

End of track
Title:  End of track
Description:  This view from Vestal Av shows the end of track as it was in 1990 on what was once the DLW main line from Binghamton to Buffalo. Looks pretty good for not having any trains on it in 25 years. The line was cut here after the consolidation of facilities, which saw, among other things, the Erie moving its trains from their Jersey City terminal to Hoboken, most of them going in 1957, with the Northern Branch trains not changing til 1960. Lackawanna's trains came off this line in 1959, after connections at West BD(now CP Johnson) and Gibson, east of Corning, were cut in. By the mid 80s, the last customers left on the Vestal side of the river were National Pipe and Plastic, and Vestal Asphalt. No trains ran west of the Old Vestal Road overpass. This part of the line, from here to African Rd, was lifted a few years later to become a walking/bike trail, which has turned out to be quite popular. Still, I cant walk it without thinking of a set of F 3s or E 8s picking up speed as they roll down along Vestal Parkway, heading for Apalachin and Owego.

Phoebe wept
Title:  Phoebe wept
Description:  The once proud-and fast-DLW main, where the Phoebe Snow hit 70 MPH, is being lifted in Vestal in this shot taken at Sycamore Rd. The right of way will be cleared to build a Lowes. West of African Rd, it will become a walking trail.

Looking east
Title:  Looking east
Description:  The view of the DLW main looking east from African Rd is deceptive, but only because the crews removing the rail have not made it here yet. It will be gone in a week.

Looking west
Title:  Looking west
Description:  The DLW main west of this crossing at African Rd will be a walking trail in less than a year. It will turn out to be quite popular. Some of the old DLW signals were preserved, and stand along the trail in a nod to its history. I could never walk it without thinking of a set of F 3s rolling a freight west, or Es on a passenger train.

Concrete pads and memories
Title:  Concrete pads and memories
Description:  This is the view across the Genesee valley from NY 19 near Belfast. The concrete footings once supported a massive steel bridge here on the Erie/EL River Line, which ran from Cuba Jct, near Olean, to NT, just east of Portageville. The bridge was dismantled around 1981, but the bases remain. For a good look at what the bridge looked like, check out Preston Cooks book Erie Lackawanna Memories, pages 75 and 76.

Forty trains a day
Title:  Forty trains a day
Description:  Hard to believe, to see it now. This is what remains of the Erie, later EL, main line, seen from the US 421 crossing, 33 years after EL folded into Conrail. A few years of state subsidized Erie Western and a few others was not able to overcome the lack of traffic. Now its gone back to the weeds, birds, and field mice.

Coal dock pier
Title:  Coal dock pier
Description:  While driving across Indiana on US 224, we saw this old building that is now an events center in Preble. It must have been a coal dealer in a previous life, as there was a row of concrete piers that at one time had a track atop them. This is the top of one pier, the plates that held the bridgework still in place.

Title:  Built in
Description:  I dont think this was structural. When the current owners built this utility shed, they incorporated one of the coal trestle piers. Kinda cool.

The poles remain
Title:  The poles remain
Description:  I note that a lot of times, once a rail line is abandoned, the track is removed-the rail and ties have obvious resale value-but the lineside poles remain. The wire has some resale value, but the poles, not so much. This one was being reclaimed by living trees along the old Erie.

Little River Trail
Title:  Little River Trail
Description:  There is a lot of abandoned rail mileage in the upper midwest, some of which has been turned into parkland or trails. Here in Huntington Ind, where Erie and later EL once had a big yard, they have built a park around the Eries Wabash River bridge. Theres not much else here anymore. The yard has been redeveloped, and the station burned in the mid 80s. At least they have a sense of their history, and the panels in the park do a good job explaining.

Erie main, once upon a time, double track
Title:  Erie main, once upon a time, double track
Description:  The Erie main line right of way is intact much of the way from Huntington to Decatur, though most of it looks like this now. Amazing how what was once an important main line, 40 trains a day, is now nothing but a tire tracks. Were looking east near Kingsland.

There was a diamond here
Title:  There was a diamond here
Description:  Were looking east along the Erie right of way, not that theres much to show for it now. The track in the foreground is a former Nickel Plate branch that is now an important line for NS. Erie crossed on a diamond prior to abandonment. While EL was here, they ran the bulk of the trains, sometimes 40/day, with N&W showing up only a few days per week. Now, EL is gone, NS runs multiple trains per day here, and the line is signalled.

Whats left
Title:  Whats left
Description:  Where once long pig trains rolled through at 50, now a switching lead for a couple of local industries served by another road that is successor to an American rail empire. The Chicago, Fort Wayne & Eastern, which now runs the Pennsy main and some secondary lines, uses this short segment of EL to reach a customer. This is the connection from the ex PRR. Were looking east on the EL.

View from the road
Title:  View from the road
Description:  The Erie main was built up quite a bit. It appears here to be 8 or 10 feet up from the road. Must have been a rush to roll along US 224 next to a set of C 425s or a pair of SDP45s on 2NY 100.
