IHB 1504 - Hammond IN - 09/24/21
Title:  IHB 1504 - Hammond IN - 09/24/21
Description:  Indiana Harbor Belt had four SW1500s (so far) rebuilt by Railpower Technologies into RP15BDF natural gas-powered locomotives in the early 2000s. Seen at the railroad’s Gibson Yard, IHB 1504 and 1514 are the former IHB SW1500s 9205 and 9202, which were built in the late 1960s. On an adjacent track, and visible in the background, is IHB GP38-2 3800, wearing its new Veterans paint scheme. IHB 3800 was built as Penn Central 8066, later becoming Conrail 8066, and then Norfolk Southern 5274 before being acquired by the IHB. (Hammond, Indiana - September 24, 2021). IHB 1509 - Hammond IN - 09/24/21
Title:  IHB 1509 - Hammond IN - 09/24/21
Description:  Blue Flags are a feature of railroading’s Safety Culture. When a piece of equipment is “blue flagged,” in cannot be moved by anyone, for any reason, until the person who flagged it, and hung their name on it, removes their name. Sitting in the Indiana Harbor Belt’s Gibson Roundhouse is SW1500 1509 (ex-IHB 9206), which has been blue flagged by two mechanics performing repairs. Each of these workers will have to remove their tags, once their work is completed, in order for this locomotive to be moved once again. BNSF 699 - Dolton IL - 09/26/21
Title:  BNSF 699 - Dolton IL - 09/26/21
Description:  Sometimes things can get a little confusing in Chicago, at least to those of us who don’t visit as often as we’d like. BNSF Dash 9-44CW 699, ES44C4 6619, SD70ACe 8408 and ET44C4 3887 are heading eastward with train V-BLUMIN1-26, which is a westbound automobile train heading from Blue Island IL to Minot ND. The previous symbol for this power was a light engine move, D-CHIIHB3-25, so I’m confused. When does it turn west? (Dolton, Illinois – September 26, 2021)

CN 99 - Homewood IL - 09/26/21
Title:  CN 99 - Homewood IL - 09/26/21
Description:  Canadian National dome car 99, named "American Spirit," is one of at least seven business cars undergoing work in the railway’s Woodcrest Shops. The most visible change is the new red, black and white (or is it light grey, as on their diesels?) paint job being applied to business cars CN 1059 "Tawah," CN 1710 "Frasier Spirit," IC 101314 "Champlain," IC 800210 "Baton Rouge," IC 800413 "Great Lakes" and IC 800653 "Sandford Fleming," along with CN 99. This car was built as a 46-seat dome-coach by Budd in 1955 as Great Northern 1325. It was assigned number 4605 by GN successor Burlington Northern, but that number was never applied before it became Amtrak 9465. When Amtrak rebuilt it with Head-End Power, it was renumbered 9409. In the late 1990s, Montana Rockies Rail Tours operated the "Montana Rockies Daylight" on Montana Rail Link (as BKSX 9409), and when that service ended after the 2004 season, the car was sold to American Orient Express as AOEX 9409. From there it was sold to Canadian National. (Homewo

BNSF 8140 - Fullerton CA - 08/11/22
Title:  BNSF 8140 - Fullerton CA - 08/11/22
Description:  Hustling east from Los Angeles, heading to Chicago, is BNSF train U-LACCHI5-11Z. A U-train? This is a Special Unit Train, consisting of BNSF ES44C4 8140, covered hopper 808426 and unmanned track geometry car 90. BNSF 90 was built from a 1946-built Budd coach, originally Richmond Fredericksburg and Potomac 54-seat coach 804 (purchased for use in the Atlantic Coast Line pool), later sold to Amtrak at their car 5423. This car reportedly ended up in Canada, stored there and possibly numbered VIA 184. However, it was carrying number MRLX 5423 when delivered to the BNSF in 2014, which leads one to surmise that perhaps it never wore that VIA number, as Mid America Railcar Leasing (MRLX) was still using the car’s former Amtrak number (5423). BNSF’s unmanned track geometry cars are numbered 90 through 93. (Fullerton, California – August 11, 2022)

NS 8118 - Buena Park CA - 08/11/22
Title:  NS 8118 - Buena Park CA - 08/11/22
Description:  Holding Track 2 (of three mainlines) as it awaits an opening at Los Angeles Hobart Yard, and also awaiting a fresh crew as permission to proceed its final 16 miles, is BNSF Guaranteed Service Intermodal train Q-ATGLAC6-28L, which originated in Atlanta, Georgia. "Guaranteed Service" these days, however, likely doesn’t mean what it should, as crew shortages have dozens of westbound trains backed up for hundreds of miles on the BNSFs San Bernardino Sub, Cajon Sub and Needles Sub, creating delays of not just hours, but days. There is another westbound stopped two miles behind this train, and most likely another two miles ahead of it as well. Higher priority trains dont wait as long but a Q-train, the hottest on the BNSF, sitting without a crew would have never happened a few years ago. This train, with Norfolk Southern ES44AC 8118, BNSF ES44DC 7849 and BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4366 for power, was still sitting in the same location the next morning, and when I checked last was 99 hours 3 minutes behind schedule! AMTK 192 - Fullerton CA - 01/21/23
Title:  AMTK 192 - Fullerton CA - 01/21/23
Description:  Once again, Amtrak train 3, the westbound "Southwest Chief", is running late … on this morning, 3 hours and 33 minutes late out of the next-to-last stop before arriving in Los Angeles. The usual pair of Amtrak P42DCs, in this case 192 and 75, this time running back-to-back (they are usually both facing forward), have just six cars in tow (two sleepers, a diner, a lounge and two coaches). Today’s train 3 will arrive at Los Angeles Union Station just 3 hours and 4 minutes late, having made up 30 minutes in just 26 miles, thanks to a generously padded schedule. Title:  AMTK 85 • Springfield MA • 01/27/23
Description:  Amtrak train 56, the northbound Vermonter, departed Washington DC in the morning behind AMTK ACS-64 652 pulling six cars (for those keeping score at home: AMTK 82531, 82748, 82691, 82782, 82672 and 48195). In New Haven, Connecticut, AMTK 652 and coach 82531 were removed, with P42DC 85 as added for the remainder of the journey to St. Albans, Vermont. The train is seen making its stop in Springfield, Massachusetts, where about half (or so it seemed) of the passengers deboarded to attend the big Amherst Railway Society's Railroad Hobby Show occurring the next two days at West Springfield's Eastern States Exposition. AMTK 2017 • Old Saybrook CT • 01/31/23
Title:  AMTK 2017 • Old Saybrook CT • 01/31/23
Description:  The Old Saybrook Station's signs are jumping the gun a bit, as it is not actually "boarding" time for the two CDOT Shoreline trains, as Amtrak Acela Express 2153, speeding from Boston to Washington DC, has to pass through first. Acela Power Cars 2017 (up front) and 2036 (on the rear) will whisk this six-car train through the snow flurries here in Connecticut, clearing Track 2 for CDOT train 1645 to arrive shortly. On this line, however, these trains cannot achieve their full high speed (150 mph [240 km/h] in a few areas, including nearby Rhode Island), as the average speed across Connecticut is less than half that at just 66 mph (106 km/h) - still faster than the Amtrak Northeast Regionals and the Connecticut Department of Transportation's trains, however. The next day I will see this same Acela trainset (Trainset 11) in Delaware. The passenger waiting on the opposite platform is, perhaps, perplexed by two people photographing this train … perhaps she's never seen a railfan before. (And many who have won't admit it.) I've looked online for his video, but cannot find it … yet. Perhaps he isn't as big an egotist as I am and doesn't post his work. (Old Saybrook, Connecticut – January 31, 2023)

AMTK 90691 • Wilmington DE • 02/01/23
Title:  AMTK 90691 • Wilmington DE • 02/01/23
Description:  Still looking like a "Hippo" (the nickname acquired by the locomotives) is Amtrak 90691. Built by Bombardier/Alstom in December 2000 as Amtrak HHP-8 661, it was renumbered AMTK 691 when these problematic locomotives were retired in November 2014 in order to avoid a conflict with new Siemens ACS-64 electric locomotives, which were assigned the HHP's numbers (650-664). Several years later, HHP-8 691 was renumbered as it was being converted to an unpowered cab car, similar to the carrier's rebuilt F40PHs, also numbers in the 90000-series, to replace aging cab cars converted from old 1960s-era Metroliners. There could be 15 of these new cab cars eventually, as all the HHP-8s are still in storage. The conversion, however, is not progressing rapidly.
