Album Info:Various equipment at the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis. On a personal note, the young boy in some of the photos is 8 year old James J. Kinzer, my son. It was nearly 100 degrees F that day. But there was also high humidity which James, native to California, had never experienced and his discomfort with this is why he has a somewhat dour expression.

Rock Island General Motors Aerotrain No. 3 and Illinois Terminal 1595
Title:  Rock Island General Motors Aerotrain No. 3 and Illinois Terminal 1595
Description:  Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific (CRI&P) No. 3 Aerotrain engine (one of two surviving) that pulled cars made from widened GM bus bodies which apparently had bad riding qualities. Next to it is Illinois Terminal Class C freight motor 1595. At the National Museum of Transportation at St. Louis, MO.

Norfolk & Western Y6a 2156 2-8-8-2
Title:  Norfolk & Western Y6a 2156 2-8-8-2
Description:  Norfolk & Western Y6a 2-8-8-2 at the National Museum of Transportation at St. Louis, MO. This is a compound articulated meaning the front cylinders are larger and use the steam exhausted from the higher pressure rear cylinders. But they could also run all cylinders high pressure for starting but would switch to compound at around 5 mph.

Frisco 1522 4-8-2, Southern 6100 FT, CB&Q 9908, C&IM 551 2-8-2
Title:  Frisco 1522 4-8-2, Southern 6100 FT, CB&Q 9908, C&IM 551 2-8-2
Description:  St Louis & San Francisco Railway (Frisco) 1522, 4-8-2, Southern 6100 FT Diesel, Chicago Burlington & Quincy 9908 Diesel, and Chicago & Illinois Midland 551 2-8-2 at the National Museum of Transportation at St. Louis, MO. The Southern FT would be repainted to its demonstrator colors for its 50th anniversary celebration at the EMD Lagrange plant (McCook, IL). I think there is a sort of optical illusion created with my son standing on a slope considerably closer than the engines.

Southern Pacific GS-6 4-8-4
Title:  Southern Pacific GS-6 4-8-4
Description:  Southern Pacific GS-6 4-8-4 at the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, MO. This class was nicknamed "War Babies" because they were made during WWII. The SP wanted more like the previous GS-5 passenger oriented engine but the War Production Board didn't allow that. So this was made with smaller drivers to be "dual purpose".

Description:  Union Pacific 4006 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" at the National Museum of Transportation in St Louis, MO. Often called the "largest" steam locomotive ever made. It was the longest, but Yellowstones were heavier and at least four other articulateds had higher tractive effort.

Georgia Railroad 724 0-6-0
Title:  Georgia Railroad 724 0-6-0
Description:  Georgia Railroad No. 724 0-6-0 at the National Museum of Transportation at St. Louis. In later years the museum gave this garish multi colored paint job of different sections painted in bright bold colors. But there was a purpose which was to aid in identifying the different major parts of a steam locomotive for visitors. Interesting location for the air tank on the tender.

Description:  New York Central 170 4-6-4 and Chicago & Illinois Midland 2-8-2 at the National Museum of Transportation at St. Louis, MO. The photo isnt very good with the sun behind a cloud, but took it to show how the museum grounds were at more than one level which is pretty unusual for railroad museums.
