Album Info:Union Pacific's Sunset Route runs through the southern part of Arizona, with branches running north to Phoenix and south to Nogales. The tracks enter the state in Yuma, and head almost due east to Maricopa, south of Phoenix. Excluding California, Maricopa is the northernmost point of the line. From Maricopa, the line runs south, joining with a line to Phoenix in Eloy, and a line to Nogales in Tucson. There is a yard in southwest Tucson, switching cars for trains to Nogales and to Phoenix. Tucson is also the end of the Gila Sub, with the Lordsburg Sub beginning just east of the yard. The rest of the run from Tucson to the border and Steins is home to several spurs branching from the mainline.

Title:  V&T 11
Description:  Virginia and Truckee 11, a Baldwin 4-4-0, is on display in Tucson. This area, known as Old Tucson, was the filing site of countless western movies. Reno itself was filmed in several movies, TV shows, and commercials here, including the movies Union Pacific, Little House On The Prairie, and dozens of others. The unit was damaged in a fire in 1995, but has since been restored. The engine was built in 1872, and was the oldest of the 8 Baldwins that ran on the line. The unidentified boxcar appears to be of a typical 1880s design.

The 1384 was built as SSW 7628 is 1979. The local developers here were kind enough to leave a strip of land across an access road open for any visiting railfans.

Description:  Union Pacifc 1654 and 3867 idle on an engine track at the west end of Tucson Yard. 1654 was built in 1980 for UP as the 3761, back in the days when they still painted the number of the unit on the side of the long hood. In the early 2010s, 3761 was rebuilt into an SD40N, with improved electrical systems, and other reconditioned compnents. 3761 was renumbered to 1654 at the end of its rebuild.

Title:  SP 1673
Description:  Southern Pacific 1673 sits adorned with Christmas decorations at the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum in Tucson, Arizona. The engine, an M-4 Class 2-6-0 Mogul, was built in 1900 by Schenectady Locomotive Works (a predecessor to ALCO). The engine operated for 55 years in Arizona, mostly out of Tucson. In 1906 the engine was converted to an oil-burner. It received a superheated smokebox and piston valves at the Sacramento Shops in 1922, and would return to Arizona shortly after. By the 1950s, SP had begun dieselization, and 1673 was bumped from local work to intermittent yard jobs. One of its last jobs was starring in the 1955 movie "Oklahoma!" 1955 also marked the 75th anniversary of the Southern Pacific reaching Tucson, and at the end of the celebrations the engine was donated to the city. Today the engine is being restored, and the preservation society is actively searching for parts to restore the engine.

UPs designations stands for C Trucks, 4400 Horsepower, Alternating Current, Controlled Tractive Effort. 45 is used instead of 44 to indicate the horsepower to avoid confusion with UPs AC4400CWs, which are classified C44ACCTE. Hiding behind 7616 and the crew shed is SD70ACe 8390.
