Album Info:Seattle has long been a railroad city. At one time, several transcontinental railroads converged in Seattle, and today the city is still an important railroad center. Most of the action can be found in a roughly 10 square mile area, from the Salmon Bay Bridge north of BNSF's Interbay/Balmer Yard, to the intermodal yard in South Seattle. Included in this area are the BNSF yards at Interbay, South Seattle, and Stacy Street, Union Pacific's Argo Yard, and the Amtrak/Sounder yard south of downtown. Included in this album are trains along the Scenic Subdivision from Salmon Bay to Downtown, and trains along the Seattle Sub from Downtown to the Lucile Street Overpass south of downtown.

Boeing Fuselages
Title:  Boeing Fuselages
Description:  Fuselages for Boeing airliners are a common load on BNSF trains in the Seattle area. Each fuselage is over 90 feet long, so each fuselage requires a spacer car behind it. The large metal fixture on one end of the flatcar acts as a bulkhead, preventing the fuselages from smashing into each other. Still frame from original video.

Switching at Balmer
Title:  Switching at Balmer
Description:  BNSFs Balmer Yard hums with activity. As a switcher at the north end of the hump yard finishes its work, another switcher drills the bottom end bowl tracks. The string of intermodal cars on the siding is most likely waiting for power to take it up the Cascades. The yard was built by the Great Northern Railway, who then passed it on to their successor, Burlington Northern. The yard came under BNSF control in 1995, when BN merged with the Santa Fe.

Cabooses Still Earning Their Keep
Title:  Cabooses Still Earning Their Keep
Description:  Two ancient "crummies" are parked on a yard track in BNSFs Interbay Yard. The old cabooses were originally built by International Car Co. of Ohio, and are now used as shoving platforms for the hump yard. The car with BNSF "Swoosh: patch , BN 12603, was originally built for the Great Northern in 1967 as their X108. 55 years and two mergers later, the car is still operating on Great Northern rails.

Description:  BNSF 8106 is one of several engines parked at the ready tracks at BNSFs Balmer Yard. 8106 is an ES44C4, built by General Electric in 2014. Despite the yard being called "Balmer" for the past 60 years (named after former GN Vice President Thomas Balmer), I had always known the yard by the original name of Interbay Yard.

BNSF GP60B 331
Title:  BNSF GP60B 331
Description:  BNSF 331 hides behind a chain-link fence at the Interbay deadline. BNSFs Interbay Yard has been home to a small deadline of locomotives for some time, and this GP60B is one of its inhabitants. Most of the engines out of service at Interbay are standard-cab EMD products. Several GP38 variants were present during our visit, along with a single SD40 and SW1200. 331, still in its H1 livery, was one of two GP60Bs parked in the engine terminal. This unusual engine, a cabless variant of the GP60, was one of 23 such units built, and was completed in 1991. These units were exclusive to the Santa Fe, and once wore their red and silver "Super Fleet" warbonnet paint.

BNSF 2123
Title:  BNSF 2123
Description:  BNSF 2123 rests silently on a side track at Interbay. The GP38AC was originally built for the Frisco in 1971, and entered Burlington Northern ownership in the 1980 merger. The unit operated in the south for most of its BN career, before being relocated to the Pacific Northwest after the BNSF merger. Today, the unit languishes in the engine terminal at Interbay waiting for a call to service.

Ex-ATSF GP35
Title:  Ex-ATSF GP35
Description:  BNSF 2694 is parked on a side track at the Interbay engine terminal. The former ATSF unit is parked behind another standard-cab EMD, but I was unable to identify it. The the right of the engine is the Interbay roundhouse, and to the left is BNSF 288, another EMD product. 2694 was built in 1965 as a GP35, and still appears to be serviceable 55 years later.

90s EMDs
Title:  90s EMDs
Description:  BNSF 155 and 288 hide behind fences, poles, and MOW equipment in the rear of the Interbay Engine Terminal facility. These units would be considered interesting finds in most other places, so its only appropriate that theyre parked in the hardest area to photograph. This image was taken with a telephoto lens (116.2 Focal Length for anyone interested) from a small side road off Emerson Street. This road runs right past the Interbay deadine, and provided far-away views of the engine terminal. BNSF 288 is a 1997-built SD75I, while 155 was built in 1990 as a GP60M, and originally wore the Santa Fes iconic "Warbonnet" paint scheme. Note that the headlight on 155 is slightly offset to accomodate the crew door on the nose of the unit. In the background is a parked stack train awaiting fresh power, and further back is the Dravus Street overpass over the middle of the yard.

Ex-BN Geep
Title:  Ex-BN Geep
Description:  BNSF 2085 is the third of a string of units parked in BNSFs Interbay engine terminal. 2085 is an ex-BN GP38-2, one of the first new engines recieved by the railroad in 1972. Earlier units in this order had been delivered to BN predecessor SP&S. Behind 2085 is another GP38, a GP38AC variant that was originally built for the Frisco.

The Interbay Deadline
Title:  The Interbay Deadline
Description:  Varied BNSF engines are massed at the Interbay engine terminal. The yard has long been a storage site and deadline for dozens of yard and local freight power. BNSF 2553, an ex-Santa Fe GP35 rebuild, is on the far left near the sand and fuel racks. On the other side of the service area is BNSF 1453, a BN SD60M now in H2 paint. In the right foreground is a line of stored GP38ACs and GP38-2s, two of which still wear my beloved Cascade Green. Further back are a GP60, SD75I, and GP35, all of Santa Fe/BNSF lineage. Farthest back is another line of stored engines, including a GP60B, ex-Frisco Geep, and even a diminutive SW1200, originally built for Northern Pacific in 1956. Of the 15 engines in this shot, only five appear to be in serviceable condition. The others are likely in for maintenance, being stored for a surge in traffic, or awaiting scrap.

BNSF 2336
Title:  BNSF 2336
Description:  BNSF 2336 is buried deep in the Interbay deadline at BNSFs Balmer Yard. The 1972-built GP38-2 had been parked here for nearly a year at the time of this image, and has an uncertain future. The engine was originally built for the St.Louis & San Francisco railroad, and still wears the Cascade Green paint it got when that road merged with Burlington Northern in 1980. Also in this line of engines are another ex-SLSF Geep and an ex-Santa Fe GP60B, both of which have been stored at Interbay for nearly two years.

Title:  H1 Geep Leads A Northbound Local
Description:  The engineer of BNSF 2265 waves as his train crosses from main 1 to main 2 on the Seattle Waterfront. This portion of the Scenic Subdivision runs along the edge of Elliott Bay from the north portal of the Great Northern Tunnel to the yard at Interbay. BNSF 2265 was originally built for the Frisco in the early 1970s, and was passed on to BN in the 1980 merger. Today, the unit is still toiling away after nearly 50 years of active service.

Title:  BNSF 2662
Description:  A GP39-3R is the second unit on a BNSF local heading north towards Balmer Yard. BNSF 2662 was built in 1965 as a GP35, and originaly worked for the Santa Fe railway. The engine was transferred to BNSF after the ATSF/BN merger, and was eventually rebuilt with updated electronic systems. Note that the 2662 wears BNSFs H4 scheme with orange and black colors, while lead unit 2265 wears the older H1 paint with orange and green colors.

Amtraks Newest Power
Title:  Amtraks Newest Power
Description:  Two of Amtraks brand new ALC-42s rest in the yard at Seattle. Amtrak 302 and 303 have only left the factory months before, and have become regulars on the Empire Builder run between Chicago and Seattle. These units will also be introduced to other Amtrak services across the country, and services like the City of New Orleans and California Zephyr are in the process of equipping with the new locomotives. These are the second and third ALC-42s I have photographed, but they will certainly not be the last.
