Title:  CIL2-8-0 # 271 - Chicago,, Indianapolis & Louisville (Monon)
Description:  Built by Alco-Brooks in April of 1906 originally as CIL #257, it was renumbered CIL #271 in 1911. The loco was retired in June of 1940 after 34 years of service and eventually scrapped. Specs -serial #40108, class H-5, 57" drivers, 190 psi boiler pressure, 22x28" cylinders, engine weight of 202,000 lb, tractive effort of 38,400 lb. No exact day in September of 1935 was given. CIL 4-6-2 #440 - Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville (Monon)

Description:  Caught sitting at the 63rd Street passenger platform is Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville 4-6-2 Pacific #440. This Monon loco was built by Alco-Brooks in September of 1912 and served well for nearly 35 yeats before being bumped out of the roster when diesels came in under President John Walker Barriger III master upgrade. The loco was sold for scrap in April of 1948. Specs - serial #51674, class K-5, 73" drivers, 185 psi boiler pressure, 23x28" cylinders, engine weight of 227,000 lb, tractive effort of 31,900 lb. The Monon Lafayette Shops rebuilt the loco and increased the boiler pressure to 200 psi and the tractive effort to 34,500 lb. No exact day in September of 1935 was given. Robert M. Hanft photo

CIL 2-8-2 #514 - Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville (Monon)

Description:  During a 1948 rail fan trip, this Monon 2-8-2 #514 and its sister behind, get a sad review by the fans as they sat in the scrap line. Built by Alco-Brooks in August of 1912, it served well in both passenger and eventually freight service for nearly 36 years before being sold for scrap in August of 1948, just a couple months after this photo was taken. . Specs as built - serial #51663, class J-1, 63" drivers, 170 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinders, engine weight of 286,000 lb, tractive effort of 53,900 lb. The loco was rebuilt by the CIL Lafayette shops and raised the boiler pressure to 185 psi which increased the tractive effort ot 56,800 lb. No exact day in 1948 was given. Tarbell photo

Description:  Here is a rare picture of Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville steam derrick #SWD1. Sometime after 1948, the derrick was renumbered MON 80001. The photo was taken by Tarbell during a fan trip in 1948. No exact day in 1948 was given.
