Pulling Quite a Train, Diamonds are with the PRR, at Englewood Union Station |
Description: |
This is Rock Island's version of EMD's BL2. BL stood for "branch line" because the unit was lighter than an F-unit and much easier to work with (i.e., steps on all corners). In a sense they were a transition to Geeps. Here 17 year old number 425 is filling out its life in commuter service with a northbound morning rush hour train at Englewood Union Station on the south side of Chicago. Those are PRR tracks it is about to cross. |

CRI&P 630 in 1965 |
Description: |
Arguably the most beautiful diesel locomotives ever made were the EMD shovel nosed E5As and E6As. Here April 21, 1965's morning sun makes the 24 year old Rock Island E6A 630 looks almost new. She is crossing the PRR diamonds at Englewood Union Station on Chicago's south side with a SB commuter train. Pigs are on another RI track. |

Blunt Ends Forward, Shall We Race? At Englewood Union Station |
Description: |
An AB6 had an E6B carbody modified with a single 1000 h.p. engine, windows and controls at one end, baggage compartment, and steam generator. Only two were built by EMD in June 1940 for the Rock Island (#s 750 and 751) for the Rocky Mountain Rocket (Google it). The train would run from Chicago to Limon, CO with an EA-unit on the front and an AB6 second. The train was split at Limon with the AB6 taking a few cars to Colorado Springs and the other unit taking the rest of the cars to Denver. The reverse happened on the trip to Chicago. Of course over the years there were variations on this theme. The six pictures I am posting are about how the EA6s lived out there lives in commuter service in Northeastern, Illinois. It looks to me that a second diesel was added in the baggage compartment making each a full E-unit. Can someone confirm this? Enjoy! |

CRI&P 1271 and Two U-Boats Pass the Tower |
Description: |
On Sept. 1, 1969 Rock Island GP7 #1271 lead a westbound freight past the Joliet (Illinois) Tower and over the diamonds crossing ATSF and GM&O tracks. The Joliet Union Station was and still is about 40 feet to the left and slightly behind the photographer. RI and GM&O Chicago commuter trains terminated here and still do as METRA. Interestingly, each railroad stopped six intercity trains here in 1969: three to Chicago and three to the south and west, for a total of 18 trains. Today six Amtrak trains stop here, three to Chicago and one each to St. Louis, Kansas City, and Texas. |

The Headlights Have It, Train #506 with 2 Pullman Standard Coaches |
Enjoy! |

Ex-DRG&W, Big Ben Spread Across the GM&O and Santa Fe Tracks and Serving as a Parlor Car on Chicago-bound CRI&P Tr #6 |
Description: |
Note, she is unfortunately behind the head-end cars. Scott Schiechl provided the following information on her. Big Ben was originally ordered by the C&O as their #1875 but was actually delivered to the Rio Grande. The D&RGW butchered the observation end to install a diaphram so that it could be used mid-train. Configured as a coach it often ran on the Yampa Valley until that train was discontinued. It was purchased by Butterworth Tours and operated as a private parlor car on the Rock Island's trains between Chicago and the Quad Cities after the RI opted not to join Amtrak. Following the RI's bankruptcy Butterworth traied to operate some kind of dinner train on the Iowa Interstate but gave up after a single season. The Butterworth's still own Big Ben and it is in good condition under roof in Iowa. For pictures of the whole trains see http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=663561 and http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=662262 |
