Album Info:Went up to Union Bridge to check out the Western Maryland Railway Historical Society. Up on arrival I noticed a lot of rail fans standing across the tracks from the Maryland Midland Office building on the east side of Rt.75 at the Main St crossing. The Historical Society was in the wonderfully preserved RR station on the west side of the street. Museum attendants told me about the remote possibility of final street run on Farquhar St. to the local Cement plant in the center of town. I had arrived at 2pm just prior to the Maryland Midland crew arriving for their routine Sunday afternoon westward run. The folks at trackside were waiting for the latest word from the arriving crew. By 2:30 the word was that there might be a special run up Farquhar St. later in the day. By 3 that had turned into a positive, the crew would indeed make the turn. Apparently the town and the railroad have been negotiating the removal of the tracks for some time. A new lead to the plant was recently put in place and no trains were to be allowed on the branch after the 30th. So this would in deed be the LAST street run concluding over 100 years of moves through the center of town. Prior to this there had been a run earlier in the week with no fan fair. Today was different. A rail fan crowd of several dozen had gathered on Farquhar St for the event. The locals, wondering what all the hoopla was about came out and watched as well. Some joining in, taking photos of the photographers as well as the train. Final point: The Western Maryland Railway Historical Society, located on Main St. in Union Bridge, Maryland has a wonderful collection of WMR materials. Lots of excellent photos in two very well maintained railroad structures at trackside. A visit to their museum is well worth the trip. They are open Wednesdays and Sunday afternoons. Union Bridge is about 30 minutes off I70 in central Maryland. - http://moosevalley.org/wmrhs/ /Dave Larrab
