Album Info:In the Winter of 2007, some of us in West Texas were treated to the sights and sounds of a Harsco Track Technologies rail grinding train working its way westward on the UP Baird Sub. Harsco's RMSX 701 provided motive power. RMSX 701 was equipped with permanently mounted water-cannon type nozzles on the front of the engine for spraying water/fire retardant in advance of the grinders. The nozzles were normally set for a fixed pattern. At times, the crew would manually aim the nozzles to cover special conditions, such as a stack of nearby ties. Second and third in the consist were crew cars RMSX 7808 and RMSX 7803. RMSX 302, a combination fuel tender for the power units and water tender for the fire suppression sprayers, followed the crew cars. RMSX 704 was next and it was a nozzle equipped tender used for fire suppression. It sprayed water along the ROW and fire suppressant foam on the ties. Next in line was generator car RMSX 705 which furnished the power for grinder cars RMSX 706, 707, and 708. The grinder cars put on major spark show. The sounds of the grinders would have put a rock concert to shame. Behind the grinders was another power car (RMSX 709) and fourth grinder car RMSX 1213. I assume that 1213 was a finishing grinder, but it was not in operation. Next in line was tender RMSX 710 providing additional fire suppression support. The final part of the consist was locomotive RMSX 711 and it appeared to be equipped identical to the lead engine. When not spraying water over the general ROW area to cool down hot spots, RMSX 711's nozzles laid a coating of fire retardant foam on the tracks. If that was not enough, the calvary was following closely behind in the form of a Hyrail fire truck extinguishing small fires that broke out behind the grinder train.
