SP SW8 1125
Title:  SP SW8 1125
Description:  SP SW8 1125 at San Diego, California on February 11, 1984, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in July 1953 as SP SW8 4620 (c/n 18355) on EMD Order 4179, class ES408-3, it was renumbered to 1125 during SP's 1965 renumbering program. Note the dynamic brake option located in front of the cab. This was one of 20 SW8's so equipped on the SP (original road #'s, 4604-4623, re# 1109-1128). The original plan was to use these locomotives on the Northwestern Pacific, but they were quickly replaced by SD7's. They were re-assigned to the Pacific Electric and SD&AE, and this unit was at work on the latter when photographed.

SP TEBU 1601
Title:  SP TEBU 1601
Description:  SP TEBU 1601 at Tucson, Arizona on November 21, 1985, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This TEBU (Tractive Effort Booster Unit) was built from retired SP U25B #6761, built as 7561 in March 1964 (c/n 34798) on GE Order 1405, SP Order P-1085. Power for the traction motors was supplied by a GP40-2 on either end, it had dynamic brakes, and it retained the fuel tank. Equipped with sensors, it could supply fuel to the GP40-2's, and keep the fuel load balanced between all units for better adhesion to the rails.

SP TEBU 1609
Title:  SP TEBU 1609
Description:  SP TEBU 1609 at Tucson, Arizona on November 21, 1985, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The SP had 14 of these TEBU's (Tractive Effort Booster Unit, #'s 1600-1613) made from U25B's. The first unit (#1600) was made by Morrison Knudsen, the rest were made by SP. They were generally placed between two modified GP40-2's (modified GP40-2 #'s 7940-7959, SSW #'s 7960-7966), and could transfer fuel between the TEBU's 2900 gallon fuel tank and the GP40-2's, balancing weight between units. They were equipped with dynamic brakes. This one was made from former SP 6713, rebuilt December 1981, assigned UP S316 but retired July 25, 2000 before receiving the number. It is stencilled: EL PASO EP M2 9-85.

SSW SW1200 2290
Title:  SSW SW1200 2290
Description:  SSW SW1200 2290 at Eola, Illinois on February 13, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1966 (c/n 31571) on EMD Order 7867, it was to be delivered as #1075 but a systemwide renumbering resulted in this road number. This EMD Order was for five SW1200's (#'s 2289-2293), with 2289 and 2290 delivered as per SP specs with the 'Frog Eye' light package, 930 gallon extended fuel tank, hood mounted numberboards and 15" Cotton Belt lettering, but because of visibility problems, the following order was delivered with a SW1500 style light arrangement with all the lights side-by-side above the front radiator grill. It is seen here at Eola in a CB&Q freight en route from EMD to the SSW.

Title:  SP SW1500 2509
Description:  SP SW1500 2509 at Phoenix, Arizona on an unknown day in December 1981, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in July 1968 (c/n 33996) on EMD Order 7109, it eventually became Northern Indiana Public Service 95. The SW1500's came in 12 orders (three of those to Cotton Belt), with deliveries starting in 1967 through 1973. One wonders why there is red bleed through on the lettering. That's no place for red paint, unless perhaps there was a change of plans. I don't know, does anyone else know? Leave a comment.

SP GP9E 3336
Title:  SP GP9E 3336
Description:  SP GP9E 3336, Tucson, Arizona, November 21, 1985, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built as road number 5634 in February 1956 (c/n 21327) on EMD Order 5436, it became 3467 after the 1965 systemwide renumbering. It was rebuilt to a GP9E (or possibly a GP9R) and numbered 3336. It later became RS 105. A quick note about the GP9E/GP9R designation: The SP rebuilt hundreds of locomotives at its Sacramento Shops, starting in 1970 with a program designated R8. This involved selling the old locomotives to Southern Pacific Equipment Company (which paid for the rebuilding) and leasing the rebuilds back to SP (for the tax advantage), thus the E designation. Around 1977, the program became GRIP (General Rehabilitation and Improvement Program) with the merger of the Southern Pacific Equipment Company and the Southern Pacific Transportation Company (when the tax advantage was lost). Thereafter, rebuilt locomotives were designated with the R suffix (GP9R). Without knowing the rebuild date, one can only speculate about the correct model designation. Perhaps more than you ever want to know can be found here: http://utahrails.net/sp/sp-r8-grip.php

Title:  SP C-50-8 4664
Description:  SP C-50-8 4664, Jonesboro, Arkansas, November 20, 1988, photo by Chuck Zeiler. I believe this car was assigned to the local switcher in Jonesboro, Arkansas at the time of this photo, but I have no verification of that yet. In 1979 50 cars of the C-50-8 class were delivered by International Car division of PACCAR (#'s 4650-4699), with some minor detail differences when compared to the earlier C-50-7 cars.

Description:  SP B23-7 5112 in Memphis, Tennessee on March 15, 1985, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1980 (c/n 42991) it became UP 196, and was retired December 26, 2001.

I was on my way to a business meeting, and the route required me to pass over a bridge crossing this scene. I did not plan this, but upon crossing this bridge, I noticed headlights, and like any worthy railfan, I pulled over and grabbed my camera.

SP RSD5 5298
Title:  SP RSD5 5298
Description:  SP RSD5 5298, Ogden, Utah, October 3, 1958, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. The SP was the largest owner of the RSD5, with the SP proper owning 36 units, and subsidiary T&NO owning 24. Some units, including this one, were traded back to Alco in 1960 on an order of RSD12's, with some of the trade-in components reused on the RSD12 order, notably the trucks. Locomotive #'s 5294-5307 and #'s 5336-5339 were set up long hood forward (front), and #'s 5445-5507 (later #'s 2871-2885) were set up with the short hood as front. On the SP, units set up with the long hood as front indicated their intended service as switchers/branch line locomotives, and those set up with the short hood as front indicated their intended service was as road helpers. This particular RSD5 was built in 1953, SP class DF-115.

SP PA1 6006
Title:  SP PA1 6006
Description:  SP PA1 6006, Ogden Utah, October 3, 1958, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Sometimes mistaken for a PA3, a model never built by Alco, this locomotive was built as a PA1 in 1948. Due to renumbering in 1949, my best guess is that 6006 was built as 6005C. The following is from the book, A Centennial Remembrance, by Richard T. Steinbrenner (c.2003, On Track Publishers, ISBN: 0911122-07-9): The SPs Pacific Lines basic acquisition policy of A-B-A sets continued to be followed with the PA-2/PB-2 orders. Alco delivered two sets in August-September 1950. By then the SP was using a new numbering system; the PAs continued in the 6000 series, and the PBs were numbered in the 5900 series. The PA-1/PB-1s numbered in the 6000 A-B-C sequence were renumbered into the new scheme, as were the subsidiaries PA-1 units. The SP came back for two more sets in April 1952, and then, in Alcos last big order for PA/PBs, for two batches, which were delivered in June-July and September-October 1953. The first batch was three sets of the usual A-B-As, but the second batch of 12 units was all PAs, equipped with standard Alco pilots. For most of their careers, the SPs Pacific Lines PA/PBs were assigned to the West Oakland Shops for maintenance although for a while seven of the final units were assigned to Taylor Yard in Los Angeles for Coast Line service to San Francisco. While the PA/PBs also operated on the San Joaquin Division on occasion, their principal assignments were on the Shasta Daylight and Cascade trains between San Francisco-Oakland and Portland, OR, and on the Overland route between Ogden, UT and San Francisco-Oakland. Beginning with the 1952 deliveries, the PA-2s came from Alco without pilots, enabling the SP to apply its own design snowplow pilots, built at the Sacramento Shops. The 1953 units incorporated the Model 244G prime mover, which included the new water-cooled turbochargers (Alco Model 710), and had distinctive stainless steel moldings around the windshields. In the meantime, maintenance costs of the 1948-49 PA-1/PB-1s had become problematic, and from July 1952 to March 1953 the West Oakland Shops replaced all their prime movers with 2250 hp Model 244Ds at the rate of four units per month. With the completion of the program, all the SP units were essentially PA-2/PB-2s. In 1956 the SP undertook a modernization program to encompass its entire PA/PB fleet. The prototypes were six high mileage units, which were stripped down to the frame and truss supports, then sandblasted down to bare metal. With GEs guidance, the SP had designed a new electrical equipment cabinet, greatly modernized and simplified. The new cabinets were preassembled and installed into the frame and truss from overhead. All of the previous wiring that snaked through the underframe was replaced and run in the engineroom overhead in troughs for ease of maintenance. Plug electrical connectors were replaced by screw connector blocks for greater reliability. The control equipment was upgraded and repackaged into compartments that featured greater accessibility. The first unit through was #6021, and by June, a three-unit set was ready for road testing. The Sacramento Shops proceeded to rebuild the entire PA/PB fleet in this manner. Externally, the most obvious effect of the upgrade was the application of Farr-Aire grills to all units that did not already have them (Alco had phased in the application of the Farr-Aire grills on the last order for 18 units to the MP in June-July 1952, which eliminated the PAs signature drip strip and horizontal slatted carbody grill). However, on the SP units, the Farr-Aire grills were not continuous along the side; rather solid panels were fixed between the grill sections.
