Southern No. 2 |
Description: |
Southern 6908 and 6913 were two of the four E-units on the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT as the train was crossing the South Carrollton Avenue underpass. This was 2.6 miles after departing from New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, and this bridge was one of about a dozen grade separations built as a part of the NOUPT project around 1950. Almost all of the underpasses had decorative concrete beams outside of the plate girders; but these had been removed here, probably after being hit by trucks. Carrollton Avenue Station was at the left end of this bridge, and you can still see one of the stairways leading down from the two platforms to the sidewalk. (approximate day) |

UP Turbine A-Unit 14 |
Description: |
Union Pacific 14 and 16 were built in March and June 1960 as a part of an order for thirty 8500-horsepower 2-unit gas turbine electric locomotives (GTEL's). They were retired in February 1970 and sold in August 1971; but the A-units remained on the UP at Salt Lake City until March 1979, when they were moved to Kansas City. Southern Crescent |
Description: |
The low morning sun illuminated the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT as a rolled by the former location of Carrollton Avenue Station on its way out of New Orleans. Today's train had FIVE E-units - 6908, 6902, 6907, 6912 and 6916 - and 11 cars. Five units were very unusual, but would occasionally show up on a northbound train if a unit from a previous trip had been left in town for some attention at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal diesel shop. The tracks in the foreground were the remnants of a Kansas City Southern yard. |

SP 2702 and 2703 |
Description: |
Southern Pacific 2702 and 2703 were the first MP15AC units ever built, placed in service on 27 August 1975. Here they were three months later, interchanging cars with the Illinois Central Gulf at the Espee's EAST BRIDGE YARD, next to the east end of the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE. The headlight in the distance was a Southern Railway geep making a delivery to the Missouri Pacific in the New Orleans Public Belt's EAST BRIDGE YARD, just off to the right. |

ICG GP38 1776 |
Description: |
Illinois Central Gulf bicentennial GP38 1776 THE AMERICAN EAGLE and caboose 199411 were on display in Kenner, Louisiana. This was actually the ICG’s second 1776, as the first one (9510) was badly burned and damaged on 10 March 1975 in a collision with a truck that was transporting crude oil. Second 1776 had been built in February 1970 as IC 9503, but it was renumbered ICG 1776 between June 1975 and September 1976. After its lease expired in 1985 it became Missouri-Kansas-Texas 328 and then Union Pacific 1985. It was subsequently assigned UP number 286, however it was retired in May 2000 before being renumbered. |

The coal originated in Illinois on the Illinois Central Gulf and was bound for Mexico. This was not a true unit train, as it had been divided into several cuts when it was interchanged from the ICG to the SP near the east end of the bridge. |
