Title:  Peaceful scene
Description:  I find a pasture of cows to be somehow quite tranquil-til a noisy train shows up!! I was far enough off that it wasnt quite so loud for me, but the cattle dont seem to be upset by the intrusion. Southbound grain DPU passes a field north of Westville.

Title:  View from above
Description:  One of the features of the US 59 project was taking out some of the hillside south of Watts. This made for a hill that is easily climbed, and which provides a good view of the tracks near MP 238. It is from that perch that we see a southbound grain train behind a pair of repainted AC44s rolling their 114 cars of grain south.

View from the hill
Title:  View from the hill
Description:  In the course of widening US 59 to four lanes, the right of way was opened up to accommodate the wider roadway, which meant blasting out some of the adjacent hillside south of Watts, near Chewie Rd. Getting to the top of the hills next to the road is a fairly easy thing, as you can park off road and walk up. I took advantage of this to get a shot of a southbound H train, whose power we see here just north of Chewie Rd.

Going my way
Title:  Going my way
Description:  I heard this train going by the house, and gave chase, catching it at Westville, passing the H J Baker feed mill. The leader looks a little worse for wear, not unusual for UP coal power, which sees a lot of exposure to the elements, but apparently not too many trips through the wash rack.

Busy, busy
Title:  Busy, busy
Description:  Watts is sometimes a busy place. We see the dodger, L 102, at right, working the yard. What would usually be his third unit is peeking out from behind the relay case at right. At left is the southbound H train, holding the main as he waits his turn at the yard. Behind the dodger is the tail end of the northbound grain train, whose crew now cant get on because the H train is blocking the power. It was a mess.

Fly in the ointment
Title:  Fly in the ointment
Description:  This train was on the siding at Watts waiting for a new crew. While he was there, the dodger would come down, run the main to the south end of the yard, then do his work. While that was going on, the H train arrived, and had to sit on the main waiting his turn. Normally the dodger would take the siding, and work from there, though the locals ofter need the main for headroom anyway. It would get busy there in about 90 minutes.

Title:  Stretched out
Description:  The northbound H train has pulled up past the yard office, its train stretched out down toward Bakery Feeds. Its only a 54 car train-with 7 units, though I think some of them are power balancing-but looks a lot longer as it glints in the late afternoon sun.

Grandstanding
Title:  Grandstanding
Description:  My grandson plays for a third grade team in Westville. The games are in the afternoon, which gives me a good shot at the adjacent KCS. They were good enough to send a northbound H train past while the game was on. Theres a lot of clutter, but this is better than Vinita, where I can hear the trains, but not see them. Last time I was up there, six trains went past on BNSF and UP while the game was going.

Oil DPU
Title:  Oil DPU
Description:  Actually, its the power that led going south. These train run as shuttles, with the roles reversed on the empty trips, as the DPU on the way south, leads on the way north. This train had quite a power set, an NS unit on the south end, and a KCSM unit trailing on the north end behind a CP unit. Sounds like a NAFTA kind of set up.

Theres no way there will ever be a need for it) of a northbound empty oil train behind a real North American consist.

Title:  Whose line is this??
Description:  A southbound AEPX train behind a UP unit gives a northbound empty oil train the roll by as the oil train takes the siding at Watts. The oil train had a single CP unit up front, and a pair of them pushing. KCS, anyone??

Class unit
Title:  Class unit
Description:  KCS has taken delivery of a group of ET 44 AHs, of which this is the first. Theyve been on the roster several months, but my schedule hasnt allowed me to get out and chase much, so this is the first one Ive caught on film, or, electrons. Figures it would be almost in the dark. Its trailing on the northbound H train at Watts.

Got beat again
Title:  Got beat again
Description:  I was heading home after chasing the southbound H train earlier-that effort is in "The Chase Is On"-when I saw this southbound on the Illinois River bridge. There was road work in progress between there and Watts, so chasing for the head end was out of the question. I was able to get the DPUs as the train passed the crossing leading to the bridge and Lake Frances.

Not quite
Title:  Not quite
Description:  I was heading down US 59 one afternoon, not chasing, and caught up to this southbound H train. I wasnt quite close enough to beat it to Westville to set up, but was able to get this grab shot of ET44AH class unit 5000 as it hit the crossing. Sometimes you have to take what you can get.

One on one
Title:  One on one
Description:  There was a single unit leader on this southbound H train, and a single unit DPU as well. This was something of a surprise, since the train was around 120 cars on a challenging subdivision. Ah, the wonder of AC power!!
