Climbing up Sneads Hill
Title:  Climbing up Sneads Hill
Description:  Loaded Coal Train led by SCL 2011 has come off the Savannah River Trestle and is beginning the climb up Sneads Hill near Evans, Georgia on the Spartanburg Sub. These heavy Coal Trains oftened stalled and had to be broken into sections to get over the hill. Each section would proceed to the siding at Martinez, several miles away. Me and my friend camped out right here many times and saw the action. This Picture was among the first Photos I took. Sorry for the poor quality, as it was taken with a cheap 110 Camera.

Title:  Charleston Sub Action
Description:  Believe this to be an old GP-7 doing some switching at Yemassee, SC. Boy have things changed here!!!! CSX now has a Building across the Tracks. The Yard Tracks in the background are long gone. The line to Port Royal was recently torn up, and the Amtrak Station is now closed, but the Train still stops. The Track the Loco is on was pulled up in the late 1980s.

Savannah Yard
Title:  Savannah Yard
Description:  A Switcher moves a cut of Cars at Savannah Yard. This was the SALs new Yard built in the 1950s. It is still in operation in this view. By 1986, all freight operations would be moved to nearby Southover yard, the old ACL facility. Today, Savannah yard is an Intermodal Facility and CSX parks Coal Trains here as well. The Savannah West Route heads south to Burroughs. (Former SAL)

The Local
Title:  The Local
Description:  Augusta-Port Royal Local arrives at Yemassee, SC. The Train will drop off some cars before heading east to Beaufort and Port Royal. It is the Summer of 1984 and I am trying to get as many Pictures here as possible. The line to Port Royal is up for abandonment, so I am documenting operations here. The line will be sold however, and service will continue. It was somewhat strange to see the big SD units operating on the branch here. The rail was quite light. Later, the line was upgraded west to handle more traffic.

The Local still operates east from Augusta but runs up the A line now to Charleston.

Note the unusual Black Number Boards on the lead Unit. Much has changed since this Picture was taken in 1984. The Pass track is gone, as well as the yard tracks in the background. A CSX Building now sits in this spot ajacent to where the Pass Track had been located.

Augusta Sub Action
Title:  Augusta Sub Action
Description:  Augusta-Port Royal Local Train arrives at Yemassee, SC led by FL/SBD 4797. It is Summer, 1984 and CSX has put up notice of abandonment of the line to Port Royal. I am here to document as many Trains as possible on the Branch. But the line would be sold to the SC Ports Authority and service would continue. In less than a year, the Diamonds and this trackage will be removed and the Augusta Sun connection track will be reconfigured into a sort of Fish Hook alignment. The Augusta Sub still connects here today, but sad to say, the Port Royal Railroad quit in 2003, and the tracks were just recently torn up.

Port Royal Sub Action
Title:  Port Royal Sub Action
Description:  Port Royal-Augusta Local Train arrives at Yemassee, SC and will head west to Augusta after picking up some Cars. It is Summer, 1984 and SBD has posted a notice of their intent to abandon the Branch to Port Royal. I have been documenting as many Trains as possible. At this time, I do not know that the Railroad is being sold. Service would continue with the SC Ports Authority. The Train is about to cross one of three Diamonds here in Yemassee. They would be removed in less than a year as they would no longer be needed. The Local will still operate from Augusta, but will begin running north to Charleston. The heavy SD40-2 was somewhat unusual on the Branch, as the Rail was light. But I saw an SD45 on the line one time as well.

Port Royal Sub Action
Title:  Port Royal Sub Action
Description:  A lone SD40-2 and Caboose passes Coosaw, SC enroute to Yemassee after a layover at Port Royal, SC. The Train would often return empty to Yemassee. Today there are penty of cars to pick up before heading west back to Augusta. Yemassee was a big interchange point at one time. It is early January, 1985 and soon the line will be the property of the SC Ports Authority. The line will continue to operate until November 2003 when the Port is shut down. Sadly, the trackage was removed late in 2010. The SAL once crossed here at Coosaw as well. All that remains today are a few Signal bases. It is a "Ghost Railroad Crossing" now. Sorry for the poor quality of the Photo.

Spartanburg Sub Action
Title:  Spartanburg Sub Action
Description:  Local Train is coming over Sneads Hill at Evans, Georgia enroute to McCormick, SC on the Spartanburg Sub. This is the famous "Sneads Hill" as it is known to Railroad Men. It is also called "Steel City" because so many Knuckles have been broken here. I have walked the Tracks here and seen all the broken Knuckles. Back in the early 1980s, I remember how Coal Trains had to break into several sections, and "Double" the hill here. One time, just for fun, my Brother made a sign and held it up as one of these trains struggled to get up over the hill here. The sign read "Double or Nothing!!" After bringing a section over the hill here, the Train would proceed to the siding at Martinez, drop off the cars, and return for the second section. Now CSX uses helpers here and doubling the hill is pretty much a thing of the past. Several Coal trains have derailed here as well. It is a heck of a grade!!!

Everett Sub Action
Title:  Everett Sub Action
Description:  The Riceboro Turn is heading south on the Everett Sub at Richmond Hill, Georgia. It is the Summer of 1985. Unknown to me at this time was the decision to close the "S" Line south of Riceboro. The route is still open at this time, but not for very long. We had just missed a "Pig" Train heading south Here when we went for Burgers. (We had no Scanner at this time) Had I known about the coming abandonment of this route, I sure would have caught that Intermodal Train instead of going for Burgers!!! You wouldnt have thought this line was up for abandonment as work was going on right here. (Tie renewal) Today, the route still extends to Riceboro and is operated by a Shortline Company. The route is gone from Riceboro to just north of Kingsland, at Seals, Georgia. This was once the Racetrack of the Seaboard Air Line, but was quickly deemed surplus trackage after the SCL Merger. Amtrak ran here until late in 1979. The end was announced in 1983, as the "New" Seaboard System began a program to get rid of excess trackage. This route was one of the first to get the Ax. Not very long after this, the "S" line north of Raliegh, NC suffered the same fate.

Description:  The Riceboro Turn is heading south on the Everett Sub at Richmond Hill, Georgia. This view looks to the south showing the recently renewed Trackwork. The CTC Signal in the distance gives a "High Green" to the south. But it would not be for much longer. The end was near for this route south of Riceboro. I had no clue either. This was the SAL's "Racetrack' to Florida!!!! The CTC remained in service for a short time after the abandonment, but was deactivated in the Summer of 1986. Signal equipment was removed in 1991. Today, the route is operated by a shortline and the track here is much deteriorated over the years since it was downgraded.
