CB&Q E9 9991
Title:  CB&Q E9 9991
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad EE9 9991 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. A baggage car was unusual for a Dinky (commuter train). In this case, the baggage car was added to deliver newspaper supplements to various news agencies along the Burlington. Usually this happened on a Wednesday or Thursday. One of my first employment opportunities in Naperville was as a newspaper boy, and part of my job was to stuff the Sunday newpapers with these supplements, generally the advertising pages, magazines, and the funny papers.

CB&Q E9 9991
Title:  CB&Q E9 9991
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9991 heading an eastbound Dinky at Naperville on Illinois, April 19, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as CB&Q E9 9991 ( c/n 19630 on EMD Order 2065 ) it became BN 9991 on 3/2/70. Sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District ( WSMTD ) 8/18/72, rebuilt to E9-Au by Morrison Knudsen 5/73, returned to WSMTD as 9921 and leased to the BN.

Note the last porthole window is painted silver. The EMD on-board toilet was at this location, so this may have been a privacy issue. My best guess is that a crew man was dealing with the call of nature and happened to be caught in the process by a passing passenger train, probably while both trains were stopped in a station. The Burlington took their passenger complaints very seriously. I was also informed that it was no pleasure for shop crews to change the brake shoes on the trailing truck at the location of the toilet discharge pipe.

CB&Q E9 9991
Title:  CB&Q E9 9991
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9991 on Train 21, the Morning Zephyr, aka the Twin Cities Zephyr, at Aurora, Illinois on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This train will need to clear the circuit before my train can arrive. I got up early to catch a Dinky from Naperville to Aurora so I could ride a railfans special to West Burlington to see 4-8-4 5632 being overhauled, a job never completed. My train was pulled by a pair of E9's, we (the railfans) hoped it would be 2-8-2 4960. Somewhere I still have my Menk The Fink button, worn by many fans on the trip to express displeasure with the new CB&Q president Louis Menk's decision to discontinue the steam program, and 5632 was sold mid-overhaul to Dick Jensen and ultimately scrapped.
