All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8664 and #8665 were constructed in February, while #8675 was built in March. They're on their way back to East Altoona after completing another helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. They are pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train around the Horseshoe Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. The N-5 Caboose is #477181.

Shown here just West of MG Tower (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8665, #8662, and #8655. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8665 was constructed in February of 1958, #8662 was built in January of 1958, while #8670 was fabricated in December of 1957. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers for a mixed-cargo freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the pushers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." In this context, they're pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train that is already passing through the Allegheny Tunnel; in a matter of minutes, though, they'll uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." In the left foreground is the link to the westbound New Portage Secondary Track.

Description:  Derailment. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here at the far left (L to R) are PRR engines #8676 and #8665. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They have just arrived to serve as "helpers" for an westbound passenger train due to arrive shortly. Visible in the center is PRR engine #8677, an AS-18AM built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. It is coupled to the "eastern" work train and steam-powered crane that are rerailing the derailed cars and locomotives of the eastbound freight train on the next track over. Visible on the right (L to R) are the two derailed locomotives, PRR engines #5631 and #8890. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company in 1950 and rated at 1,000 horsepower each. #5631 is an AS-10AM while #8890 is an AS-10. Visible in the background are four of the original PRR 12th Street Car Shop buildings. A portion of 10th Avenue is visible in the immediate foreground.

Description:  Malinowski. Here is duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Robert R. Malinoski that was taken just West of the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 5 June 1965. Shown here are eight diesel-electric locomotives climbing the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a Pennsylvania Railroad mail and express train bound for Pittsburgh and points West. In the lead are helper engines #8679, #8665, and three more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8679 was constructed in April of 1958, while #8665 was built in February of the same year. Behind them are three unidentified units of the "EP" Class built by GM-EMD. It must have been an exceedingly-heavy train! ("PrrFan18n")
