Description:  ICG piggyback train P-55 was about to cross Napoleon Avenue and enter the railroad's intermodal ramp at Stuyvesant Docks Yard. The locomotives were GP10 8249, GP11 8734 and SD20 2001. The two tacks in the foreground were the main lines of the New Orleans Public Belt. Notice the ICG tractor on the first flat car.

Jefferson Avenue Interlocking
Title:  Jefferson Avenue Interlocking
Description:  For most of the twentieth century, the double track lines of the IC/ICG and the New Orleans Public Belt ran side-by-side along the Mississippi River from Lambert Junction in Jefferson Parish to Race Street Junction, a distance of 7.4 miles. For most of the way, the NOPB tracks were on the riverside of the IC/ICG; but between Jefferson Avenue Interlocking and Harmony Street Interlocking, two miles, the roads swapped positions. Here is ICG southbound piggyback train P-55 crossing over the NOPB at Jefferson Avenue, about a mile from its destination at the railroad's intermodal ramp at Stuyvesant Docks Yard. Today's train has an especially eclectic mixture of power: GP10 8249, GP11 8734 and SD20 2001. The freight cars on the left are in the NOPB's Cotton Warehouse Yard.

Description:  Gulf & Mississippi No. 8009 leading its train n April 1988 (dlte unknown) on the former Aretesia-to-Mobile main. This engine was built as IC No. 9009 in April 1954 and was later sold to the Puget Sound & Pacific in 1997. Trailing engine is ex-ICG 8266. With apologies to Toi Sink, but I used his photo because the only time I saw this unit, between Bay Springs and Laurel with the late Sam Lindsey, the sprocket in my Vivitart 220/SL stripped my film and all I got w{s to watch it go by! Title:  Shore Line Local
Description:  The southward ICG Shore Line District local is parked on the main line in the P&W Industries scrap yard, just north of the former Covington depot. After the train arrived in Covington and did all of its switching, it would usually tie-up here, ready to depart for Bogalusa the next morning. By the time the crew parked their train, a railroad station wagon would be waiting to bring them back to Bogalusa; and the following morning, they would return to Covington and take the train back to Bogalusa. The local's locomotive had to use the wye at the end of the line to run around its train; so if the local arrived with its engine running long-hood forward, it would depart this way too.

Description:  On 1 April 1975 the Illinois Central Gulf local heading south on the former Gulf Mobile & Ohio main line between Bogalusa and Slidell, Louisiana was diverted into the spur at Florenville and collided with some stored cars. Lead unit 8158 had been rebuilt from GP9 9158 in May 1968. After the wreck it returned to the railroad's shop at Paducah, Kentucky for some major work and re-entered service in April 1977 as ICG 8126. As bad as the damage was, there were no fatalities. Engineer Luther Walley survived on the walkway behind the cab, while another trainman was in the trailing unit.

An Odd Couple
Title:  An Odd Couple
Description:  Missouri Pacific GP7 1761 was teamed up with Illinois Central Gulf GP10 8291 on a westbound MP transfer run near the east end of the Huey P. Long Bridge. In the early 1980's ICG GP10's would occasionally show up on MP transfer runs and yard jobs in the New Orleans area, but this combination of power was not very common. MP 1761 was retired six months after this photo was taken.
