KCS Train No. 54 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern train No. 54 was leaving New Orleans behind GP40-2 799, F7A slug 4060, and GP40-2 797. The 799 was built in August 1979 along with the 798, while the 797 came in February 1981 along with the 796. Between April and September 1981 the railroad ran slugs 4050 and 4060 into New Orleans between pairs of GP40-2’s, as shown here. While all four of the GP40-2’s were set up to power slugs, the slugs could only draw power from one end, so the second geep didn’t contribute any horsepower to the slug. The use of road slugs into New Orleans resumed in August 1982, between a GP40-2 and another geep. This continued through the end of 1990 when the arrival of SD60’s and used geeps enabled the railroad to retire its road slugs. |

KCS 799 leading train #55 |
Description: |
A KCS trio of a GP40-2, F7(A) Slug, and GP40, drag a freight across Essen Lane on their way from Shreveport to New Orleans. The train is either a #53 or #55(most likely) on the the "New Orleans Sub" of the "Louisiana & Arkansas Division" for the KCS. Train 55 usually had chemical empties returning to Baton Rouge. It also carried piggybacks. (53 ran the same route, but to Family Lines' Gentilly Yard) KCS 799 was part of a two unit order delivered August 1979, making it five years old in this shot. |

Six KCS Locomotives Powering Freight Down Wilson Alley |
Description: |
KCS Retro Belles 4047, 4048, 4052 along with KCS 4577, 2026, and 2954 overpower this long freight going down the Wilson Alley grade in Shreveport. You can see all the sand spots where trains going up the grade have had to get all the traction possible to make it up the grade (and I've seen some trains get stuck). The teal building adds color, but unfortunately clashes with the Retro Belle paint scheme. |

Mostly dry now |
Description: |
A week ago, this was a raging torrent due to the almost ten inches of rain that fell between Friday night and Sunday. The creek bed has been washed over, but the bridge remains as steady as it has always been, the six units and 114 cars of the H train rolling across at speed. |

Leaning to the curve |
Description: |
The best spot cleared of foliage by the US 59 project is here at Chewie Rd, where there is a fairly tight S curve. The southbound H train rolls into it, seen from the shoulder of the US 59 southbound side. |
