CB&Q 2-6-0 Class H-1 35 |
| Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-6-0 Class H-1 35 presumably on the Erie at Paterson, New Jersey, sometime in 1891, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built by the Rogers Locomotive & Machine Works of Paterson, New Jersey in December 1891 (c/n 4624) as a Mogul type for the CB&Q. An interesting note about the Rogers Works (later, a subsidiary of Alco). The Works did not have a direct rail connection. The nearest railroad was the Erie, about a mile from the factory. The finished locomotives were hauled through the city of Paterson first on temporary tracks laid in the streets and pulled by teams of as many as 20 horses. Later, when streetcars were operating in Paterson, heavy flatcars were used, again using "horsepower". During 1898 the CB&Q adopted a locomotive classification system, this locomotive became a class H-1, one of 116 H-1's from various builders and CB&Q subsidiary railroads. During 1904, the CB&Q adopted a numbering system for locomotives, this locomotive became 1089. It was retired in May 1927. |

This appears to be a copy of a Roger's builder photo. The date reflects this site's limit, not the photo date of 1881. Number 173 was built by Rogers in June 1881 as New Haven & Northampton #23 (c/n 2757), recame NYNH&H #173 in 1887, rebuilt by the New Haven shops in 1900 to class L-8, renumbered to NYNH&H #646 in 1904, retired in February 1924., |

GN 2-6-0 #306 - Great Northern |
| Description: |
Nice original photo of the Great Northern 2-6-0 Mogul #306 built by Rogers Locomotive & Machine Works in 1887. The photographer, Madison Lake, caught the loco near the Vancouver yard coaling station. It appears that the loco was pulling a second tender which was being filled with water. Specs D-2 class, 55" drivers, modest 150 psi boiler pressure, 19x24" cylinders, small engine weight of 99,800 lb, modest tractive effort of 20,085 lb. The entire class of 60 locomotives was retired by 1926. |

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-6-0 Class H-4 1261 at Fort Madison, Iowa on October 23, 1939, photographer unknown, image from Joe Collias collection, 8X10 print scanned from Louis Zadnichek collection. Number 1261 was built by Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works in Patterson, New Jersey, completed in March 1900 ( c/n 5516 ) as Kansas City Saint Joseph & Council Bluffs number 544, quickly reassigned to Hannibal & Saint Joseph as their 544, renumbered into the CB&Q system in 1904 to CB&Q 1261 and classed H-4, retired in April 1947. The photograph was captioned as follows: Typical of the steam motive power housed at this tiny terminal was 2-6-0 Mogul No. 1261, here all steamed up in 1939 and awaiting departure time for a round trip over the branch with the daily except Sunday mixed train. A side-door caboose accommodated the infrequent cash rider. |
