MILW 4-4-2 #21 - Milwaukee Road
Title:  MILW 4-4-2 #21 - Milwaukee Road
Description:  Good example of a Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) 4-4-2 Atlantic type steam locomotive. Built in August of 1897, it was originally MILW #840, but the loco was renumbered several times - MILW 402 in 1899, MILW 902 in 1901, MILW 3002 in 1912 and finally MILW 21 in 1938. The loco served the Milwaukee Road long and well until being scrapped in May of 1940, about the time this photo was taken. This may very well be one of the very last photos before the scrapper's torch dismantled it. Original specs - serial #15462, class A1, 78" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, Vauclain compoumd with 22x26" & 13x26" cylinders, engine weight of 140,700 lb, modest tractive effort of 14,196 lb. Original specs - serial #22708, class A1, 78" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, Vauclain compoumd with 22x26" & 13x26" cylinders, engine weight of 140,700 lb, modest tractive effort of 14,196 lb. The loco was finally retired in May of 1940. Stripped of its bell, light and tender, this may be one of the very last photos ever taken of the loco by an unknown photographer. MILW #21 sits behind it and is awaiting the scrapper's torch too.

MILW 32 No Date No Location
Title:  MILW 32 No Date No Location
Description:  Data from "Baldwin 4-4-2 for the Idaho & Washington Northern" Railway and Locomotive Engineering, Vol 23, No 2 (February 1910), pp. 52-53. Baldwin Locomotive Works number was 33778 built in September 1909. When the Milwaukee took over the I&WN in 1916, they placed this locomotive in its own A-2/3s (Class A-4s/B-4s) class. In the 1930s, the 3135 was later considerably modified with a Schmidt superheater. At some point, the Milwaukee decided to remove the Baldwin smokebox superheater that had accompanied the locomotive when it was delivered to the Idaho & Washington Northern as number 31 in 1909. At the same time the shops mounted a new boiler, they also rolled in taller drivers. The result was a considerably heavier, but more powerful Atlantic that remained in service as a single-engine class until 1951.

CAR 4-4-2 #618 - Canadian Atlantic Rwy
Title:  CAR 4-4-2 #618 - Canadian Atlantic Rwy
Description:  Beautiful builder's photo of the 1901 Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) 4-4-2 Atlantic type locomotive. This locomotive was built to be a more powerful locomotive than previous ones for the increasing passenger service between Montreal & Ottawa but failed to deliver the expected power. It was the last Atlantic type loco ordered by the railway. Specifics - 84.5" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 13.5x26" cylinders, engine weight of 168,910 lb, tractive effort of 14, 181 lb. Scrapped in April of 1917. The RR Picture Archives does not recognize "CAR" as the reporting mark for the Canadian Atlantic Rwy.

ATSF 4-4-2 #1420 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Title:  ATSF 4-4-2 #1420 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:  Built by Burnham, Williams & Co (Baldwin) in 1904, it was classified according to ATSF policy of using the first loco number in the series as the class, hence class 1400. It had 79" drivers and developed an impressive 220 psi boiler pressure. As one of the lucky ones in the class to not be scrapped in the 1920's, it was rebuilt by the ATSF shops in 1926-29. The rebuilt group lasted through the 1930's with the last one being scrapped in 1948. Forrest Trittenbach photo. Date is approximate.

BO 4-4-2 #1442 - Baltimroe & Ohio
Title:  BO 4-4-2 #1442 - Baltimroe & Ohio
Description:  Long before an EMD E8A loco wore the #1442, this 4-4-2 Atlantic type steam locomotive had the nonor. This small 4-4-2 Atlantic type steam locomotive was built by Baldwin in March of 1910 as B&O #1442. The original drivers were massive 80" ones but during a rebuilt in March of 1918, they were reduced to 74" drivers. After nearly 32 years of service, the loco was retired in May of 1942 and presumedly scrapped. Rebuilt specs - 74" drivers, 205 psi boiler presure, 22x26" cylinders, engine wt of 212,260 lb and tractive effort of 29,600 lb. This is a C.C. Grayson photo. No exact date was given for the photo so an approximate was used.

ATSF 4-4-2 #1484 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Title:  ATSF 4-4-2 #1484 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:  Built by Baldwin in 1910, the 4-4-2 Atlantic style steam locomotive was nicknamed Bull Mooser for the odd 3 dome appearance and external steam piping like the one in the photo. In the 1920's, the class was simplified and superheated which changed its unusual 3 dome look. They were very handy for branch-line local passenger service and lasted until the early 1950's. Original specs - class 1480, 73" drivers, 220 psi, 15x26" high pressure cylinders, 25x26" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 231,675 lb, tractive effort of 22,038 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo so approximates were used.

ATSF 4-4-2 #1485
Title:  ATSF 4-4-2 #1485
Description:  This appears to be a reprint due to the image quality, possibly a photo positive of a builder's photo. Built by Baldwin in 1910, the class had the nickname of "Bull Moosers" due to the unusual domes and piping. According to the American Engineer & RR Journal "A somewhat startling arrangement of steam pipes is a prominent feature in the design, and is clearly indicated in the accompanying illustration. The steam is taken from the boiler at the rear dome and through two 5 in. pipes carried to the forward dome in which the throttle valve is located." Also noteworthy is the three equal-sized domes on the boiler, the central one was the sand dome and the two flanking domes held steam, the reverse of the usual layout. Note that another steam pipe emerged near the smokebox on either side after passing through a smokebox reheater that measured 1,147 sq ft in area; this pipe entered the outside low-pressure cylinders. No information was listed for this photo.
