GM&N 352
Title: GM&N 352
Description: Gulf Mobile & Northern Railroad 352, named The Rebel, at an unknown location on an unknown date in 1935, photograph by Harris & Ewing, image from the Library of Congress. This was one of two identical trains built in 1935 by the American Car & Foundry, and a third train of almost the same design was built in 1937.

The Rebel
Title: The Rebel
Description: The south's first streamliner makes its station stop at the Gulf Mobile & Northern passenger station in downtown Jackson, MS, on its southbound trip from Jackson, TN to New Orleans. You can see the top of the Old Capitol building in the background. This trainset was one of three that were built for the GM&N in 1935 and 1937 by American Car and Foundry. These trainsets were later referred to as the Little Rebel after the creation of the GM&O in 1940 and these trains ran until 1954. The power cars were scrapped in 1962. Today, this station now houses the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The tracks through here were removed in the late 1990s except for a small section of the main that they left infront of the station. Picture taken sometime in May of 1938.

GM&O REBEL
Title: GM&O REBEL
Description: The Gulf Mobile & Ohio's LITTLE REBEL was photographed just outside of the Southern Railway's TERMINAL STATION, on Basin Street in New Orleans; but we can't tell if this was train No. 1 pulling into the station, or if it was backing out to be serviced at the GM&O's Canal Yard. The building in the background is the Municipal Auditorium.

Power car 352, along with the 353 and their trains, was built at American Car & Foundry's plant at Berwick, PA for the Gulf Mobile & Northern in 1935 for service between New Orleans and Jackson, TN. After the GM&N merged with the Mobile & Ohio to become the GM&O these trains were extended north to East St. Louis between 1942 and 1950. They were discontinued between New Orleans and Slidell on 8 March 1954, less than two weeks before New Orleans Union passenger terminal was placed into full operation. (approximate day of photo)

GM&O REBEL
Title: GM&O REBEL
Description: Here is a much-used publicity photo of the Gulf Mobile & Ohio REBEL on the median of North Rampart Street, just outside of the Southern Railway’s TERMINAL STATION in New Orleans. The photo is undated, but we know it was taken between 1940, when the GM&O was formed, and 1947, when the railroad adopted the Alton Railroad’s red-and-maroon paint scheme, because the train was still wearing its original red-and-silver colors. The REBEL was discontinued between New Orleans and Slidell on 8 March 1954, and TERMINAL STATION was closed on 16 April, when New Orleans Union passenger terminal was placed into full operation. (approximate date of photo)

Title: GM&O Train No. 2
Description: The engineer of Gulf Mobile & Ohio train 2 – the northbound REBEL – can be seen in the cab of power car 353 as he awaited his 6 p.m. departure from the Southern Railway’s TERMINAL STATION in New Orleans. The photo is undated, but we know it was taken between 1940, when the GM&O was formed, and 1947, when the railroad adopted a red-and-maroon paint scheme, because the train was still wearing its original red-and-silver colors The 353 was built by American Car & Foundry in June 1935. NYSW "MotoRailer" #1002 - New York, Susquehanna & Western
Title: NYSW "MotoRailer" #1002 - New York, Susquehanna & Western
Description: Interesting example of a 1940 American Car & Foundry doodlebug they called a "MotoRailer". Most "MotoRailers" like the IC "Land O' Corn" model were a two-unit diesel configuration with 225 hp engine and a top speed of 83 mph. No date was given on the photo but from its appearance, it appears to be relatively new and popular mode of transportation. This appears to be just a single unit, possibly with dual end controls. Note the billboard behind the front touting a direct route to Penn Station and Times Square. No photographer listed.
