IC 9563
Title:  IC 9563
Description:  IC 9563 works the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 18 Jun. '20. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:  A CN local passes Arrowhead Park (left) and the corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, (right) as it heads southwest via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 19 Jun. '20. Plexus occupies part of the former site of the P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years. The oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006. The mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The paper mill's water treatment facility stood to the left. Arrowhead Park is a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to these tracks.

Description:  A CN local passes Arrowhead Park (left) and the corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, and Ascension Medical Group - Main Street (originally Affinity), 101 Main St. (right), as it heads southwest via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 19 Jun. Ascension's web site claims that this medical facility is "Conveniently located in Neenah on the banks of Lake Winnebago." That large lake lies over a mile to the east of this facility. This facility stands adjacent to where the South Channel of the Fox River meets Little Lake Butte des Morts. Plus, lakes have shores, rivers have banks. As I roll my eyes, I sarcastically remind myself that common peasants dare not question science, ever, but especially during our ongoing pandemic. Science likes to pretend to be infallible.

Description:  A CN local passes the Main St. overpass as it shoves its train into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 1 Oct. '20. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background to the right. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. [The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.]

IC 9563
Title:  IC 9563
Description:  A CN local parallels 4th St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI, on 9 Oct. '20. Local was preparing to head for Hilbert. The blue facility in the background is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI, in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. (built in 1960), the tan building partially visible at the far left. The blue facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s (according to tax records, this facility was built in 1966), they primarily processed waste paper. Both facilities clearly used to receive rail service, but do not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of them.

Description:  A CN local passes Intertape Polymer Group, IPG, 741 4th St., as it heads east via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI, on 9 Oct. '20. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St. on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO tracks. It’s the same facility, but the address changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. They receive rail service from the other end of the facility, but they, obviously, do not currently receive service from this end. Local was headed for Hilbert.

Title:  IC 9563 and GTW 4910
Description:  A CN local slowly bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 5 Mar. '22. Railroad employees have to flag the crossing and the crew has to sound their horn because the signals have been malfunctioning for several weeks. The CN has attempted to repair the signals but they haven't been able to locate the problem. According to an article in the Post-Crescent on 27 Feb. '22, "The only remaining remedy is for the railway to completely replace the crossing, including all of the foundation materials. That work cannot happen until the ground thaws and the hot-mix asphalt plants open in late April or early May." The interesting brick building partially visible to the left is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. It was built between 1895 and ‘01 by the Marshall Paper Co. (a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper), founded in ‘93. The last surviving partner retired in 1942. The facility was used for a warehouse by Kimberly-Clark (K-C) from at least ‘45 to at least ‘60. It was home to Appleton Furniture Mart ca. ‘74 to ‘77. Baxter’s Beef and Pizza Co. opened here in ‘77.

Batesville Local
Title:  Batesville Local
Description:  Batesville Local northbound approaching Papermill Road, a few miles north of Grenada. This was probably the best job to be on. They would go to work at 10:00, take their train 45 miles north to Batesville and return home, sometimes working 2 or 3 small customers, but somedays going straight there and back, usually getting off at 2 or 3 PM.
