SAR NG1 (4-6-2T)
Title:  SAR NG1 (4-6-2T)
Description:  The first narrow-gauge line of the Natal Government Railways was constructed from Estcourt to Weenen. Two small 4-6-2T side-tank locomotives, designed by D.A. Hendrie and built by Hunslet Engine Company, were acquired for this line in 1907. They were numbered NG1 and NG2 by the South African Railways in 1912, but were not classified. Both were sold to Angola in 1915. NG1 is now part of the Sandstone Heritage Trust's fleet of narrow gauge locomotives.

SAR Class NG4 16 (4-6-2T)
Title:  SAR Class NG4 16 (4-6-2T)
Description:  In 1911 the Natal Government Railways placed the first two of seven 4-6-2T Pacific narrow gauge tank steam locomotives in service. Five more were delivered to the South African Railways in 1913 and 1914. They were all built by Kerr, Stuart and Company and numbered in the range from NG10 to NG16. When a system of grouping narrow gauge locomotives into classes was eventually introduced somewhere between 1928 and 1930, they were all classified as Class NG4.

RDG 614 "The Crusader"
Title:  RDG 614 "The Crusader"
Description:  A streamlined Pacific GS1sas leads The Crusader, train #614 (the afternoon eastbound) past the Skillman depot. I'm told by a fellow who enhanced the pic that this is the #117. In 1947, the Crusader ran twice a day between Philadelphia and Jersey City. The trainset has an observation car on either end. The eastbound side is now tucked into an extention off the tender. In JC, the engine will be turned and placed on the other end, but the rest of the trainset is not turned.

PRR 4830, GG-1, 1955
Title:  PRR 4830, GG-1, 1955
Description:  PFJ. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken at Frankford Junction near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 28 September 1955. At the right is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4830, a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) built in Juniata during June of 1935, rated at 4,620 horsepower, and retired in April of 1967. At the left is Reading Railroad engine #214, built during 1948. According to Mr. Ben Kranefeld, "The Reading locomotive pictured is not a Northern type, but rather a G3 'Pacific' (4-6-2). It should also be noted that the Reading G3 is more than likely heading up a PRSL-Wildwood bound train, rather than a railfan excursion."

RDG 4-6-2 #217 - Reading Co
Title:  RDG 4-6-2 #217 - Reading Co
Description:  Great action shot of Reading 4-6-2 #217 heading up a crack varnish with baggage cars and four passenger cars. Built by the Reading's own shops in June of 1948 (no serial number), the idea that Reading was investing in steam this late in the game definitely points to a need for power to pull the passenger service as older 4-6-2's were retired. Unfortunately, the loco and its entire class barely completed 9 years of service, they were retired in June of 1957. Specs - G3 class, 80" drivers, impressive 260 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine weight of 329,450 lb, tractive effort of 48,344 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo so "guess-timations" were used.

L&N Train No. 10
Title:  L&N Train No. 10
Description:  in 1951-52 the Louisville & Nashville constructed a temporary shoo-fly at Franklin Avenue, about midway between N.O.T. Tower (milepost 803.7) and NO&NE Tower (milepost 802.7) in New Orleans, so that an underpass could be built. L&N Train No. 12
Title:  L&N Train No. 12
Description:  Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 number 253 was leading train number 12 along Elysian Fields Avenue at Chartres Street. Number 12 was the daily-except-Sunday commuter run to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The train had a 5:15 PM departure from Canal Street Station, and it was just a few minutes into its 2-hour-20-minute trip. The train's first car is in the new (post-war) blue paint scheme, while the other cars are in the older green scheme.

This photo was taken from the pedestrian walkway to the Mississippi River ferry landing, just off to the left. The two tracks on the left are the New Orleans Public Belt main lines, the three tracks in the middle belong to the L&N, and the tracks on the right – on Delta Street – belong to the Southern Pacific.
