Rebuilt BNSF SD40-2
I couldn't tell, but given the number, I'm guessing that this has been de-turboed, and turned into an "SD38-3." Thoughts?

Jon Clark General Looks to still be an SD40 as there is no paper air filter in front of the dynamics. I wonder what the history is on this unit... 9/6/2008 3:37:24 PM
Joe Green General considering the 1860 is classified as a SD39-2 Id guess this one is as well. 9/6/2008 4:39:39 PM
Neil Stutzman General May be separate number series for units equipped for yard service. 9/6/2008 6:12:08 PM
Matt Hagfors General 1850-1860 2 SD39-2 A total of 11 SD39-2 rebuilds anticipated from group SD40-2 6824-6836; so far #1854 & 1860 reblt from 6829 & 6836; in RCO service 9/21/2008 6:51:08 PM
Scott Bruce General If they are calling it a SD39-2, that would seem to indicate a 12 cylinder emgine in place of the 16 cylinder for a SD40-2 9/22/2008 5:42:51 AM
Scott Bruce General The change would not be apparent from the outside. GP/SD39s were turbochardged also. 9/22/2008 5:43:44 AM
Ashley Rodriguez General did no one, note the turned hoppers. Next to the H3? 10/14/2008 2:15:46 AM
Mark Holderbaum General They sometimes replace the governer with a sd/gp-39 series which limits the engine to 2300 hp; or deactivate the turbocharger. Does not require any external changes or different engine block. BNSF has done this to some of their oldest SD-40 units that have been bumped down to yard service. They only way to know is the blue inspection form in the cab which lists the model and horsepower. 12/2/2008 11:17:17 AM
