L&N GP9 528         
L&N GP9 528 at Nashville, Tennessee on an unknown day in October 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1956 as L&N GP9 453 (c/n 21444) on EMD Order 5422, it was renumbered to 528, then 2403, later becoming SBD 2403. It has what appears to be an exhaust pipe leaving the third carbody door from the far end.

david sharpe General nice pic :) ! If memory serves me correctly,that exhaust pipe was from a steam boiler for passenger use .Most of the passsenger geeps had "torpedo" air tanks on the roof and the steam boiler exhaust stack seen here,although this unit has the standard configuration of air tanks transverse on the underside. 10/30/2015 2:46:39 PM
Chuck Zeiler General The CB&Q had a similiar arrangement on their SD7's and SD9's. In that instance, the exhaust pipe was for a Vapor Standby heater which occupied otherwise empty space (except for the air compressor) in that location. 11/4/2015 10:42:23 AM
