VIA Train 59 to Toronto crosses the Lachine Canal
The ties in the foreground were part of CNs line to the Port of Montreal until about twenty years ago. That route did not allow double stacks to pass (as it passed underneath CNs viaduct to Central Station) and so was abandoned and the tracks torn up. All that remains are these ties and the swing bridge (out of view to the right) which is permanently open to canal traffic. VIA 6454 is heading south over trackage that was electrified at one time. When CN dieselized, the electrification was no longer needed. Behind the bridge to Central Station is the Five Roses Flour mill, a Montreal icon.
