Bryan Smith General The locomotives are parked on House track #5 while the speeders are on House track #4. There were 3 more tracks located adjacent to the depot with the one next to the depot being House track #1. My understanding is Eufaula was a huge cotton shipping point back in the day and boxcars would be lined up on the house tracks so that the car doors would be directly across from one another. Planks of wood would then be placed between the cars so that cars on all 5 tracks could be accessed from the depot warehouse. The gang planks were still in the warehouse part of the depot in the 1980's when I worked there. Here is a photo that shows the massive size of the depot at Eufaula along with the 3 house tracks closest to the depot. The track on the bottom left that is curving toward the photographer is House #5. About 20 car lengths behind the photographer is the track scales. All 5 house tracks used to tied back into House #5 but by the 1970's they had been chopped off near the depot. Ho 9/23/2012 6:58:49 PM
Bryan Smith General Oops...ran out of room. The ending of the story goes like this: House 4, due to an awkward curve coming off the mainline, was taken out of service by the track department and became the track of choice for track equipment....such as speeders. Here is a photo of the Eufaula depot in 1980 showing it's massive size and still proudly proclaiming it's Central of Georgia history: http://bsmith3608.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=301563 9/23/2012 7:01:40 PM
