ATSF 4-4-2 #542  Contributor's Pick!       
#542 was a popular number that appeared on 3 separate locomotives for the Santa Fe, but this was the original and only steam locomotive in the group. Built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) in 1904, it was the first in the 542 class of Atlantics. Specifics - 79" drivers, impressive 220 psi boiler pressure, Vauclain balanced-compound Atlantic with 15x26" high pressure cylinders and 25x26" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 208,110 lb, tractive effort of 20,364 lb. The negative was listed as a Riley one & the photo from John F. Boose photo collection. The photo has degraded over time. A "cleaned up" version is also in this album.
