In April and May of 1976 Amtrak ferried at least four brand new F40 units from Chicago to Los Angeles via New Orleans on the PANAMA LIMITED and the SUNSET. Here is the 221 on the head-end of the SUNSET, leaving New Orleans with SDP40F units 571 and 552. The train is on the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal WESTERN CONNECTION just past Carrollton Junction. The thoroughfare is U.S. 61, then known as Airline Highway, and the photo was taken from the Palmetto Avenue overpass. |
