ICG E-UNITS
At 3:15 on a Sunday afternoon Illinois Central Gulf E9A 2039, E8B 4105 and E9A 4038 were at the sand tower at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, and in 15 minutes they would back into the station and onto the northbound PANAMA LIMITED. The B-unit was still lettered ILLINOIS CENTRAL, while the cab units were two of at least six ICG E-units painted in Amtrak colors while on lease to the passenger carrier. The 2039 was originally Florida East Coast 1034, and was one of five ex-FEC E9A's (1031-1035) acquired from Precision National Corp. in 1969. These units were IC(G) 2036-2040 and were easily-recognizable by their flat F-unit type number boxes.
