PRR 5818, BH-50, 1963
Centipedes. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad "Centipede" locomotive in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 10 August 1963. Shown here is PRR engine #5818 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1948. Although parked at the Juniata Erecting & Machine Shop's yard, it is about to be scrapped after only 15 years of service! This engine was built originally for passenger service; it generated 3,000 horsepower, and so was classified as a BP-60. Due to various chronic problems, however, it was converted to helper-only duty by 1952; it generated only 2,500 horsepower then, and so was reclassified as a BH-50.

Rev. Jonathan Spurlock General Love that "disc" Baldwin builder's plate. Shame that none of these were preserved. 7/29/2016 9:18:56 PM
