Per diem car  Contributor's Pick!
Because of the per diem rules concerning railroad equipment in force at the time, some short lines had large fleets of cars that were essentially free runners, and didnt come home much, a lot like Railbox, only owned by a particular road. Middletown & New Jersey was one such road. They had a very short main line in Orange County NY, and little on line traffic, but a large group of these box cars, which could be seen everywhere. This one was passing Jamaica station on the LIRR, bound for Holban Yard on RF 7, the west end job that handled traffic from Sunnyside Yard A to various points on the west end of the railroad, working as directed. A bonus is the EL box right behind. Always good to see EL represented!!
