SP 4449
The 1984 LOUISIANA WORLD EXPOSITION took place along the Mississippi River in New Orleans between 12 May and 11 November. During the fair, the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the NRHS sponsored an excursion from Portland to New Orleans and back using former SP GS-4 class 4-8-4 4449. The WORLD’S FAIR DAYLIGHT arrived at the fair on Saturday 2 June, and then most of the train was moved to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal; but the 4449, water car PNWC 4219 and combine PNWC 3300 MILN D. GILLESPIE were parked on the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad at the fair, as shown here, until Friday 8 June.

In this view, monorail train No. 3 had just passed over the locomotive. The fair monorail system had been built by Universal Mobility Inc. of Salt Lake City and was auctioned off at the fair’s bankruptcy sale in 1985… along with just about everything else. The bridge in the background was opened in April 1958, while the uncompleted bridge in the foreground wasn’t opened until September 1988. (approximate date of photo)
