MILW 4-4-2 #21 - Milwaukee Road
Good example of a Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) 4-4-2 Atlantic type steam locomotive. Built in August of 1897, it was originally MILW #840, but the loco was renumbered several times - MILW 402 in 1899, MILW 902 in 1901, MILW 3002 in 1912 and finally MILW 21 in 1938. The loco served the Milwaukee Road long and well until being scrapped in May of 1940, about the time this photo was taken. This may very well be one of the very last photos before the scrapper's torch dismantled it. Original specs - serial #15462, class A1, 78" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, Vauclain compoumd with 22x26" & 13x26" cylinders, engine weight of 140,700 lb, modest tractive effort of 14,196 lb.
