Topped Off And Ready For Service
4005 rests in the engine terminal at Cheyenne. The Big Boy has just topped off on coal, and will have its tender filled with water for another westbound journey. The tender of each Big Boy was a behemoth of its own. Each one measured just over 47 feet long, and had a capacity for 56,000 pounds of coal and 24,000 gallons of water. A stoker engine and mechanical lubrication system were also located in the tender, directly behind the cab under the coal bunker. Despite this massive size, stops would still have to be made to complete the arduous journey over the Wasatch range. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger)
