PRR 8665, AS-18AM, 1959
Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken near Allegrippus, Pennsylvania, on 25 September 1959. Shown here just West of MG Tower (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8665, #8662, and #8655. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8665 was constructed in February of 1958, #8662 was built in January of 1958, while #8670 was fabricated in December of 1957. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers for a mixed-cargo freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the pushers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." Also visible are Montour open hopper #17455 and PRR N-5 cabin car #477719. William E. Burket Collection.
