RSCX 0-4-0T #53 - Republic Steel Co
Title:  RSCX 0-4-0T #53 - Republic Steel Co
Description:  Originally this loco was a Bourne-Fuller Steel Co 0-4-0 tank switcher but with the mergers of Bourne Fuller, Republic Steel and Central Alloy Steel, this little 0-4-0 tank loco fell under the Republic Steel steam roster. Just a small piece of history in the steel industry but i'll bet it was an important switcher at one time! Disposition unknown. Paul Prescott photo

CSX 3131, BNSF 5791, UP 6473
Title:  CSX 3131, BNSF 5791, UP 6473
Description:  A colorful trio of foreign visitors lead a through freight parallel to Harrison St. and approaching Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via CN, former SOO, rails at Neenah, WI on 14 May '18. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, is visible to the right. I am curious to learn where the new turnout (stacked in pieces between the tracks) will be installed.

IC 3107
Title:  IC 3107
Description:  A CN local pulls 12 cars west through The Flats via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 12 May '18. Train was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. The bridge crosses the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River through the Flats. South Island St. (which I was standing on) used to run parallel to the north bank of the South Channel. Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and ‘57. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. This remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River. Edward West bought Grand Chute Island and excavated the canal in 1870 to provide water power for the industries which were built soon after. Up until about 2010, everything beyond the train would have been obscured by the paper mill which stood there for over 100 years. The Kerwin Paper Co., a subsidiary of Riverside Paper Corp., closed in ‘05 or ’06. It was demolished in order to erect the hideous modern apartment buildings, known as the Landing at Eagle Flats and Riverwalk Place, in ‘11-‘12. The white, concrete wall beyond the train is a remnant of the paper mill’s foundation. The bridge tender’s tower for the Lawe St. bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal can be seen near the center of the photograph. The recently restored lock tender’s house can be seen background right.

The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St. and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background. Description:  Chione. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in Trenton, New Jersey, on 23 August 1953. The photographer is not identified. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1814, a G-5S (4-6-0) "Ten-Wheeler" built in Juniata as number "5704" during 1924, renumbered "1814" in January of 1952, and retired in February of 1954. Looks to me like #1814 and several other "Ten-Wheelers" have been marshalled for movement to the recycling plant.
