L&N No. 9 (1)
Title:  L&N No. 9 (1)
Description:  This was a view from the cab of Louisville & Nashville E7A 780 on train No. 9, the southbound PAN-AMERICAN, as it made its way into New Orleans. The train was running alongside Interstate Highway 10, having just passed through GENTILLY YARD and crossed the Louisa Street grade crossing. Just ahead was the Southern Railway crossing at N.E. TOWER (milepost 803.75), while No. 9’s destination at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal was about 10 miles away. The train was discontinued about two years later, on 1 May 1971, with the advent of Amtrak. (approximate date of photo)

Description:  This was a view through the fireman’s windshield of Louisville & Nashville E7A 780 on train No. 9, the southbound PAN-AMERICAN, as the train prepared to back into New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal at SOUTH WYE JUNCTION. L&N Train No. 9
Title:  L&N Train No. 9
Description:  Louisville & Nashville train No. 9 - the combined PAN AMERICAN from Cincinnati and GULF WIND from Jacksonville - was nicely-illuminated by the morning sun as it made its stop at Carrollton Avenue Station in New Orleans, about three miles and 10 minutes away from its destination at Union Passenger Terminal. Today's train consisted of E7A 780 and FP7 695 with 12 cars. No. 9 was running about 20 minutes late, so this rare image would been taken around 8:05.

After No. 9 arrived the next morning, the L&N discontinued operations along the Mississippi Gulf Coast in preparation for HURRICANE CAMILLE, which made landfall that night. The storm damaged 23 miles of track, together with signals and communication along 37 miles of the line. Full freight operation did not resume until 8 September, and passenger service began shortly after that. The tracks in the foreground were remnants of a Kansas City Southern yard.

L&N E7A 780
Title:  L&N E7A 780
Description:  It's Saturday 1 May 1971, and at midnight Amtrak had taken over or eliminated almost all of the country's long distance passenger trains. Louisville & Nashville E7A's 779 and 780 had just brought the very last L&N passenger train into New Orleans, and were resting at the NOUPT sand tower. In a couple of hours, they would back into the station and then leave with all of the L&N's passenger cars that were still there.
