Album Info:2006 Photos from CSX's Spartanburg sub. This line runs between Spartanburg and Greenwood (Parke Jct), SC. It is the former C&WC mainline, now CSX's AK Line. 2006 has been a year of big change for this line. Its seen track re-alignment in 2 locations, some CTC installation and bridge replacements. The infrastructure upgrades are long overdue for this line

Title:  Changes at Kilgore
Description:  The Kilgore siding is being extended another several hundred feet or so and CTC will be installed. Crews also did some minor track re-alignment. When its all said and done, the main will go straight and the siding will move to where the main currently sits in this photo. Around the curve in the distance, the main & siding will revert back to their original alignment. The crossing in the distance will be removed and a new road will be built in the red clay area on the right

Title:  A Tiny Q692 is tugged by a pusher crew
Description:  Q692 is hardly worth calling a train today, 2 engines and 3 cars. The pusher crew on #409 retrieved the outlawed train and is bringing it back to Spartanburg. The spring switch here at Ora may soon disappear as CTC is going in at Kilgore. I would imagine that it will be a matter of time before Ora and Roebuck receive the same treatment

Description:  He was following 3 northbounds up from Greenwood. He ended up having to take the siding at Ora while the others got to go on to Roebuck to meet a southbound. Its times like this when the Kilgore siding could really come in handy and its probably why CSX is upgrading it now! He ended up waiting here for a couple of hours before proceeding north

Description:  This is the first time I have seen a coal train use the siding at Kilgore. Since they extended this siding and closed most of the grade crossings in it, this siding is now a decent place to meet trains. Once the CTC is turned on, I'm sure it will get a lot more use!

Changes at the turnout
Title:  Changes at the turnout
Description:  CTC will also be installed at the CN&L turnout. The old signal and new southbound signals are seen standing beside each other. The new northbound signal for the C&WC is laying on the ground. This CTC installation will replace the current setup which is a 'self-restoring turnout'. The normal turnout position routed for the CN&L, so crews wanting to stay on the C&WC must walk up to the signal and turn a key switch to actuate the turnout. A medium clear indication is shown on the signal once the turnout is thrown for the C&WC. After the train passes, the switch will return to its normal postition. This setup was installed about 10-12 years ago I believe

Title:  New CTC at the S end of Ora Siding
Description:  Perhaps the oddest of the new CTC installations is here at Ora. The N end of the siding will have a spring switch (installed 5-7 years ago) while the south end will have CTC. This will be the termination of a stretch of CTC between Irby and Ora -- about 7 miles or so. Note the northbound signal only has 1 head. My guess is either an approach or restricting will be displayed to indicate movements into the siding. At the time this photo was shot, the signals had been erected, but power switch has not been installed here. This may be my last photo of the old switch stand here

Description:  After waiting here for a couple of hours, Q693 finally gets to head south. You can see the new CTC signals installed here at S Ora. This will be the beginning of a stretch of CTC extending between here and Irby -- about 5-7 miles or so. Those old block boards will be a memory within a few months

Description:  An empty hopper train sits near the north end of Kilgore siding. The old switch was located where the antenna tower is behind the lead unit. The new road on the right is the relocated Kilgore Bridge Rd which used to cross at grade around the curve. That crossing was the main reason very few trains ever met in this siding.
