SOO 4-6-2 #2719 - Soo Line RR |
Description: |
Built by ALCO-Schenectady in May of 1923, this 4-6-2 Pacific was built originally for the Wisconsin Central to run passenger service between Chicago, Duluth and Minneapolis. When the WC went bankrupt, it was sold along with others to the Soo Line. It gained fame as the loco heading up a special railfan "Farewell to Steam" trips in the late 1950's. It was finally retired and donated to the Eau Claire, WI for static display. Later a preservation group brought the loco back to working condition and it continued heading up tourist trains until 9/11/2001 drove the insurance rates out of sight. It was saved by being loaned to the Lake Superior RR Musem and the North Shore Scenic RR where it continued to pull tourist trains. In 2019, it was finally purchased by the museum and plans are to restore it to working service for future tourist trains. I hope it makes it! |

CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-1 2837 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-1 2837 at (I believe) Schenectady, New York on an unknown day in 1907, photo by Alco, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built by Schenectady (Alco) in 1907 (c/n 43482), one of 15 class S-1's (#'s 2830-2844), copies of 30 Baldwin-built class S-1's built in 1906 road #'s 2800-2829. The S-1 class was based on the Class R-5 2-6-2 Prairies, with the tube length increased by 24 inches and the driver diameter increased to 74 inches. The cylinders, driving and trailing axle journals were the same dimensions as the R-5's permitting interchangeability between the two classes. This particular locomotive was rebuilt to Class S-1-A in 1924 and sold for scrap in April 1951. The absence of a headlight suggests that this locomotive was shipped to the CB&Q where the Q's own style of headlight (known among some as a cuckoo headlight because of its shape) would be installed. |

Description: |
The loco was built by Alco-Schenectay in July of 1917 and served very successfully in passenger and freight service. It was rebuilt around 1927 with additional features added and its cylinder size changed.. After nearly 31 years of service, it was scrapped in the Erie yard in Meadville, PA on 11/7/1947. Rebuilt specs - K-2-A class, 77" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 26x28" cylinders, Elesco feed water heater and stoker installed, tractive effort of 41,800 lb. I believe this is a Paul Prescott photo. |

Description: |
A proud engineer leans out the window of this shiny new Pacific built by Alco-Schenectady in 1917 and classified as an Erie K-2-A loco. On the back of the photo, the unknown photographer wrote "About 1915" but it wasn't built yet. The date would be closer to 1917-18 due to the spotless sheen on the loco. |

CNW 4-6-2 #2908 with a rare "Sky Spotlight" - Chicago & North Western |
Description: |
A much later 1923 E2a class Alco Pacific type loco when compared to #1574 listed earlier, this one carries the proud "Route of the 400" triangular sign on the front. It sported the 79" drivers and a solid 225 psi boiler pressure. Patrick McNamara (see comment below) identified the strange looking angling "canister" on the front above the faceplate as a sky light used to announce the arrival of the crack CNW premier passenger train. Thanks, Patrick, for the info. This is a unique feature I was totally unaware of until now! |

The engine weight hovered around 295,000 lb and it could produce a medium tractive effort of 45,823 lb. The date is approximate. |

ERIE 4-6-2 #2928 |
Description: |
Still fairly new to the Erie roster is this handsome 4-6-2 Pacific. Built as a heavy USRA 4-6-2 Pacific by Alco-Richmond in March of 1919, this muscle added a much needed boost to the Erie passenger service. It was rebuilt to inclued an Elesco feedwater heater which bumped up the tractive effort some. The loco ended up in it later years as part of the North New Jersey commuter service. After nearly 32 years of service, the loco was scrapped by Luria Bros & Co in Buffalo, NY on 11/17/1950 This is a Paul Prescott photo. |

This is a photo by Paul Prescott of Erie 4-6-2 #2928 in Chicago, IL. From the load of caol in the tender and steam visible, it appears to be ready for another run east, maybe even the Erie Limited. It was rebuilt to inclued an Elesco feedwater heater which bumped up the tractive effort some. The loco ended up in it later years as part of the North New Jersey commuter service.
