Aside from the copy maker's name there was no information on the slide. Thanks to Gary Hart in the comments for filling in the correct year (1956), photographer (Clerence Cade), copy maker (W. B. Folsom), and location (Columbus, GA). It would be nice to get the story on the saddle tank to the Centipede's side, or for any part of this photo really. The date (aside from the year) is approximate. From the Ralph L. Phillips collection of the Bay State Model Railroad Museum.

Rolfe. Here is an original photo by N. Rolfe that was taken while rounding the Horseshoe Curve in a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train on Sunday, 4 November 1951. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5811 and another "Centipede" whose number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and rated at 3,000 horsepower each. #5811 was built in March of 1947 and retired in April of 1962 after just 15 years of passenger and helper service; it was the lowest-numbered locomotive of its class on the PRR. #6 of 6.

Volkmer. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1959. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5811 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5811 was constructed in March of 1947 and retired in April of 1962 after just 12 years of revenue service. It's the very first PRR "Centipede"! Partially visible at the far left is the East Altoona Coaling Tipple.

Centipedes. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad "Centipede" locomotives in Frankstown, Pennsylvania, on 17 May 1964. Shown here (L to R) are two drawbar-linked pairs of PRR engines: #5824-#5811 and #5817-#5829. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1947 (viz., #5824, #5811, & #5817) or 1948 (viz., #5829). They are about to be scrapped after only 16 years of service! These engines were built originally for passenger service; each unit generated 3,000 horsepower, so they were classified as BP-60's. Due to various chronic problems, however, they were all converted to helper-only units by 1952; each unit generated only 2,500 horsepower then, so they were reclassified as BH-50's. Also visible in the foreground is my pet dog "Millie," who has just completed her own inspection tour of these soon-to-be-dispatched "Centipedes."

Here is page one of a two-page article entitled "Baldwin Centipede Production Model, Pennsylvania RR Class BP-1 3000 HP." Drawings by Craig Bossler. It was published originally in the February 1967 issue of "Railroad Model Craftsman" magazine, page 34. Middle Photo Caption: "May 1964 photo by Tom Smith at Hollidaysburg, Pa., shows half the PRR Centipede fleet. Not one sample of these huge locomotives were saved." #5814 is a BH-50 built by Baldwin as a passenger service 3,000 horsepower BP-60 in September of 1947, later regeared to a helper service 2,500 horsepower BH-50, and retired in April of 1962.

Here is page five of a six-page camera study celebrating the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Centipede" locomotives. It was published originally in the May-June 1973 issue of "PC Railroader" magazine, page 27. Here are four running-gear photos taken of a pair of semi-permanently coupled "Centipedes": #5816 and #5828. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and rated at 2,500 HP each. #5816 was built in November 1947 and retired in September of 1962, whereas #5828 was built in November of 1948 and retired in April of 1962.

Shown here is PRR engine #5818 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1948. Although parked at the Juniata Erecting & Machine Shop's yard, it is about to be scrapped after only 15 years of service! This engine was built originally for passenger service; it generated 3,000 horsepower, and so was classified as a BP-60. Due to various chronic problems, however, it was converted to helper-only duty by 1952; it generated only 2,500 horsepower then, and so was reclassified as a BH-50.

Centipedes. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad "Centipede" locomotive in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1960. Shown here is PRR engine #5820 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1948. Standing in front of it is Mr. Ken Sellers ~ a long-time resident of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, who worked as a hostler for the PRR. Mr. Sellers was kind enough to give me an unofficial, inside look at several Diesel units stored next to the Roundhouse in East Altoona ~ including #5820. This engine was built originally for passenger service; it generated 3,000 horsepower, and so was classified as a BP-60. Due to various chronic problems, however, it was converted to helper-only duty by 1952; it generated only 2,500 horsepower then, and so was reclassified as a BH-50.
