Stopped In The "Bottleneck"
Title:  Stopped In The "Bottleneck"
Description:  The eastbound St. Paul Turn waits south of Cedar Lake Parkway for a green signal on a gorgeous September Saturday morning. The train is waiting in the southern end of the "bottleneck" which stretches between Cedar Lake and Lake Street along the Kenilworth Corridor, which has been a bone of contention in the "relocate freight rail/co-located freight rail with LRT" debate.

"5390 Ft Clearance From This Point"
Title:  "5390 Ft Clearance From This Point"
Description:  A yellow signal keeps the eastbound St. Paul Turn (out of view behind me) from crossing Cedar Lake Parkway until the BNSF dispatcher can clear the crew onto the Wayzata Sub at Cedar Lake Junction. The sign which alerts the crew to how much clearance exists north of the parkway testifies as to how this is the narrowest part of the Cedar Lake-Lake Street "bottleneck."

Stopped COFC
Title:  Stopped COFC
Description:  BNSF routes most of its intermodal jobs over the Staples Sub, but the Wayzata Sub has begun to witness their passage too. I came upon this COFC job with a BNSF GE and a former BNSF EMD for power which had stopped for a red signal late on a lovely late September afternoon. As the crew waited to proceed on into town, motorists going east and west on Highway 12 enjoyed being able to go as they pleased.

Was This The One?
Title:  Was This The One?
Description:  I found this ex-BN caboose sitting couple to a string of cars (mostly covered hoppers) on the old Northern Pacific passenger main south of Northtown Yard. Since the cupola windows are all plated over, this caboose now must function as a shoving platform. Was this the caboose I saw on the Wayzata Sub when I was a kid back in the mid-1980s which had the kind old railroader who waved back to me from the cupola?

Ford Branch Landmark
Title:  Ford Branch Landmark
Description:  This trestle west of Fordson Junction is an landmark along the Ford Branch. Sadly, unless new business locates along the line, this trestle may end up yet another railway bridge converted into a rail trail bridge. (C'mon Ford, sell the Ford Plant site off to an industrial developer who ships by rail!)

Title:  Steam Era Sign?
Description:  This is a vintage Milwaukee Road sign located just north of Fordson Junction on the Short Line. Does it date back to the steam era?
