Big Boy 4005
Title:  Big Boy 4005
Description:  UP 4005 leads a train out of Laramie in April of 1948. 4005 will be donated to the Forney Museum in Denver after its retirement in 1959. 4005 was also the only Big Boy to get into a serious/deadly wreck. In April of 1953, it took a bad switch at 50 miles per hour, derailing. The engine flipped, killing the engineer and fireman, and mortally wounding the brakeman. Thse werent the only deaths, as severla of the head-end cars were hog cars, and many of the pigs were killed when their cars derailed. surpisingly, the engine would be rebuilt, and would continue in service until the end of steam service on the UP. UP 4005 Before The Accident
Title:  UP 4005 Before The Accident
Description:  UP 4005 has little time before its accident the next year. On April 27 1953, the unit took a bad switch at Red Desert at 50 mph, flipping the locomotive, and piling the first 18 cars of the 62 car train in a 70 heap. The tender was pushed into the cab of the flipped engine, killing the engineer and fireman, and crushing the brakeman. Escaping steam shot 100 feet into the air, preventing the nearby section gang from approaching the roiling engine. The brakeman would be extracted from his cramped position between a seat and the side of the cab after 10 hours, but would later succumb to his wounds. Four of the first 18 cars had been full of hogs, and most of these were killed on impact, although some did survive, and escaped into the Wyoming desert. After the wreck, the mangled Big Boy was stored in the yard in Cheyenne until it was rebuilt. Exact date unknown. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger)

Big Boy 4022
Title:  Big Boy 4022
Description:  Big Boy 4022 takes a ride on the turntable in Cheyenne. The Big Boys extreme size made servicing them a complicated endeavor. In anticipation of the arrival of the first Big Boys in 1941, UP undertook a plan to improve their right-of-way from Cheyenne to Green River. Water towers were raised to accommodate the 47 foot tenders, and turntables like in Cheyenne were improved or replaced. The turntable in Cheyenne was 126 feet long. The Big Boys measured 135 feet, so, if aligned perfectly, the pilot and rear of the tender would overhang 4 and a half feet. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger)
